Hello forum goers! I recently purchased a set of custom Necronomicon domain markers from a fellow here in the Cthulhu community and thought I might review them for everyone. For those interested, the creator's original post can be found here , along with contact and ordering information.
The first thing you'll notice is just how wonderfully detailed these things are. They bare a strong resemblance to the Necronomicon from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy. There's certainly nothing wrong with using that as inspiration either, as it is probably the most recognizable version of the book. Personally, I always liked the idea of having an ancient tome bound in human flesh and inked in blood. Of course, these aren't made of blood nor flesh. They're actually a very sturdy resin, painted after the fact. The material holds quite a bit of fine details however. Everything from the prominent (and creepy) face, small textures and wrinkles, to the asymmetrical stitches holding it all together. You can even see a good handful of lines for individual pages if you look along the side edges and past the spine.
I've included a few action shots, hopefully to give a better idea of proportions. These pieces are a tad larger than a playing card, but not so big to make using them impractical. They cover your resourced cards and just a bit more, so I'd say they're just about perfect in that respect. They are of course a little taller than the old stone domains from Fantasy Flight, but those were always on the short side anyway. The nice thing about the Pocket Necronomicon is that it's super lightweight. You get a sturdy and attractive piece of art to pin down your resources without having to lug around something like those stone domains. I had actually affixed some felt to the back of mine to make resourcing a little easier still.
I had requested that my domain markers be unpainted. I fancy myself an artist and hope to be able to do a decent job of it myself. That said, Ryan does offer his Pocket Necronomicons painted. He has plenty of shots of them sporting various color schemes even. Everything from brown and leathery to a more abstract and humorous green. I'm sure he'd be willing to work with you on other ideas, too. After having exchanged a few e-mails with him, it's pretty obvious that he take great pride in his work. It definitely shows through too!
My final thoughts? The pieces look absolutely great and have garnered a lot of positive comments at my local game shop. They're lightweight, but provide a bit more heft than just using a sleeved card for your domains. I was always dissapointed that I was never able to snag a third Shub or Hastur stone domain when they were available through the Sanity Redemption. Because of that, I never really used them. Now I have a set of domain markers that I'm ecstatic to be using. They're unique and fun while getting the job done. I don't think I could have found anything better for the price!
