Princes of the Sun Question

By Mykel The Vile, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Can the Martell player use all the cards at his disposal in the expansion.

The cards with say, a Stark crest or dual crest (Targ, Stark ) like Ser Jorah Mormont, are they only to be used for the said Houses.

It does say in the Core book that its only the cards that say "House X only" that cant be used, unless its the said House.

If that's the case, whats the point in the crest at top right of card. To detemine if you pay a penalty maybe ??

Cant understand why Jorah Mormont would be anything but a Targ card.

If anyone can use most cards from most decks then what is the point of playing with a certain House. I could be mixing something up here though as I'm

still fairly new to the game.

This has been bugging me for a while now though. Cant make sense of it.

Were playing tonight with the Martells in play for the first time and it would be good to get some clarification as the Bara and Targ player are asking

me if they are to have the said cards for there decks.

I think there's 5 cards all in all that are not martells.

Cheers

Apologies for the disjointed sentences, just try and follow the full stops. I dont know why it does that sometimes.

If a card does not specifically say "House X Only" in it's textbox it can be played by any house, however if your house card does not match the house of the card (defined by the crest in the upper corner) then you do pay a 2 gold penalty for playing the card out of house.

In terms of the dual crested cards, they are meant to represent characters who have held different allegiances (or shifting ones) throughout the course of the Game of Thrones storyline. In the specific case of Ser Jorah, he was a lord and knight in the North (Bear Island to be exact) before an unfortunate incident caused him to be exiled and stripped of his lands and titles (hence the Stark and Targ crests).

So no, not all the cards in the Princes of the Sun box are specifically for Martell.

And how does the 2 gold penalty work, Is it when the card is brought into play on top of the value of the card cost ?

Cheers

When you play the card from your hand during Marshalling, you pay the printed gold cost of the card +2 gold.

Seems a crap idea to use other Houses cards, just told the chaps this at our game and they all thought the same thing.

Whats the point in being able to use nearly any houses card in your deck, spoils it a bit.

Am wondering now if there is any players out there who dont mix there Houses or is everyone at it.

The only thing I can think is the 2 gold is too a high price to pay to have too many bastard cards in the deck. Then again if its only a one off payment in the Mashalling phase it cant be too much of a deterrent to fill up your deck with all the strongest cards from all the Houses.

Seems a crap idea, though were all new to card game so....

Well, the +2 gold is a very steep price, so almost everybody uses very few out of house cards, or none at all.

There's cards like the Neutral House Card , the Alliance agenda, the Alliance plot and several Treaty agendas like this one that let you mix cards from different houses more freely, but they don't see much competitive play either, because they have pretty heavy disadvantages.

If you're just starting out with the game, I'd suggest you disregard out of house cards completely for the time being. It's a concept more suited for experienced players anyway, IMHO, who know the card pool and can better assess when it's worth paying the OOH penalty and when it's not.

Besides, if you really dislike the idea of OOH cards, you can just create a house rule not to use them in casual play with your friends. It's just when you play with people from other metas, or when you play tournaments, that you have to be prepared to encounter them every now and then.

You also must pay a 2 gold penalty to place an out of house(OOH) card during setup. So including too many in your deck can really hurt the deck's setup. Not something I like to do. Setup is important.

There are certain cards that do mesh well in other houses. i.e. - Put Aegon's Hill(targaryen location) in a Greyjoy deck that has the plots Fear of Winter and Blockade, and then plenty of other income choke cards and you can kill the best characters from your opponent's hand before he gets a chance to play them. However, it would cost you 5 gold to play this card OOH.

If you are just starting I am with Rat - stay away from OOH cards for now.

Thanks for input chaps.
