Rogue Traders companions in Middle Ages :)

By Khensu, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hi all, I'm new on the forums, but have played the game for a year now, and my players have achived much, so its not easy to make them new stuff to get or to see, but as they are reaching rank 6 I made a storry evil enuf to make them work hard ;)

The Basic concept is that they loose all there stuffs, all there implants (only esencials stay, like lungs or cogignators) and all there mutations. They are on a mission in a feudal world, that they dont know of, they dont know who brought them there, and only get rags at start...

They are on a world outside of the imperium, where the ppl live in harmony with each other and with the world...

The ppl live in Kingdoms and have a faith based on a saint, who was a minor commander in the crusade that liberated the sector a very long time ago... ( not the basic sector, my own )

and thats the basic info that my chars got, nothing else till now, they have worked the 1st day as laborers in a small town they found near a river...

as we go own I will reviel more info here too :)

if you want can ask or say ideas too ;)

That... Does not sound fun.

Indeed not. Being stripped of all their equipment and even implants without any explanation or chance to avoid it, after months spent to aquire the stuff will lead to nothing but frustration. It won't make the challenge better but let the players feel cheated. With some inspiration it's entirely possible to build a challenging adventure for Rank6+ PCs - at least my GM is a living proof for that ;)

I'd be rather upset as well. The story would have to be air tight as to why I just got punished in such a way.

This will only be more frustrating for characters that are gear/implant dependant. I hope you don't have an explorator.

well... its true that it sounds strange, but its fun, not for me ( have to work out many details )but for my players, they where like "what could you trow at us that we cant beat?" and this is a nice answer to that...

They started imidiatly to adept to the situation, and use there superior skills to forge some kind of an advantage from this, even if stripped from there stuffs, that they didnt entirely lost, just couldnt bring with them being teleported out, and for the implants, my players are humans, and want to stay that if they can, so it was a good thing that they got there original parts back, like my Arch Millitant, who lost an eye, but now has all 2 back and doesnt need to use devices to see...

I have an Explorator in the group, who I stripped from his powers too, because he is out of power, and cant recharge here, but I will give him some of it back in time, same goes for the Astropat in the group who lost most of his psy, reduced to 1 point, so he cant use powers on feathered as he would usually do, and he cant call in for help, as he is to weak now, maybe from the shock of being teleported...

Anyways, this was a minor balancing done by me, so all 4 of my players feel equal here, as non have super powers that dwarf the others skills, they are still strong, the Explorator being half mashine didnt loose all his stuffs, he only lost the parts that can be taken out, this way he still has huge armor vs anything, even without his armor, and the Astropat is still strong too, as he can use his force bolt at a minimal range, but still better then most of the melee weapons that can be found...

I think this little ( will be like 30h of gameplay minimal ) storry will make my players learn a bit about there own chars, and they will like there overkill equipment even better then they do now... and its a good tool to make there teamwork better :)

They say allways that they dont want to use the "flashlight" (las weapons) because its weak, now if they manage to find one, it will be overkill even if its just a laspistol :)

ohh and I didnt say, but they started in a little town called Ratpool (1000 ppl or so) its on the border of one of the human empires on the planet, its a nice place with forests and a river, so they can start with hunting, working at the docks, doing manual work untill they can get some better cloats, not this rags... and then they want to get into higher ranking jobs, like a tutor for a noble or management or anything else, that they know of :)

my players are: Arch-Millitant, Void Master, Astropat, and an Explorator :)

You know what I would have done? Brain-switch. Players come into contact with an DAoT relic that happens to be paired up with one on the other side of the Expanse. Screen shakes, everything goes woobly-wobbly, and they wake up in the bodies of a group of feral-world natives. Now they've got a REAL challenge. They have to get off that planet, back into their real bodies and undo all the damage that has been wrought by their doppelgangers in the meantime. Cliche as hell, but cliches tend to exist for a reason.

Not bad too :)

If I had an RT in the group I maybe would have used this instead, but I dont so it was good this way too, I needed to make them a bit weaker anyways, as said above they had a lot to go around...

Or brain switch into a different PCs body.

I could see that being abused by my players.

"I'm in the seneschals body? Right, i go to a tattoo parlour. I want to get the Phrase <PC name> is great tattoo'ed on my face"

well... yeah, but I dont like the idea of brain switching, and my players dont like it eather...

but they like this setting, the mistery of not knowing why or how is a main drive to them, sure, they didnt like the loosing your stuffs part, but its only temporary untill they get back on there ship... the only things thay "loose" was some bionics, but some of them just say that they got some of there humanity back, and so they are quite happy with that, sure as players they are a bit sad too, as the stats where nice, but looking at the chars side they are happy :)

anyways, only 2 more days and then we will continue the storry :)

I am interested in how they do and if they get back

the fun has started really now :)

what my players did, and what did the universe trow agenst them :)

so, my players used there strenght and went to manual labor 1st, they sleept on the street to save up some money, and used the money to buy the voidmaster a good looking suit, instead of the rags they where in, then he aplied to the Trader Guild as a man who can read and can do some math... he was accepted as he could write a good "letter of recomendation" for him self as requested from the master of the guild... meanwhile the explorator was getting to know the blacksmith of the town a bit better... the Arch-millitant of the group went and worked in the manual labor business somewhat more, 1st as a dock worker, then as a lumberer... our astropath was the only one who couldnt get any real job, as he is blind, and dont want to reweel that he can see without eyes as they still didnt find out if they can or cant use "magic" here...

After 2 weeks of work, I started an event, a "box" turnament of the fighter guild... the 1st price was a membership and some equipments ( armor, sword)... the void master and the arch millitant went on the match and had a nice fight agenst some of the ppl there, as they didnt had unarmed warrior or any bonus on melee, it was a hard turnament, but they managed to gain 1st and 2nd place, what they used too, as they made bets on the void master who lost on purpose... so they made a nice little money on the turnament, and they got there price too...

It was a good thing that the turnament was held now, because an other even started almost at the same time, but outside the woods, a very powerfull wolf (Blink Wolf) was spoted and it killed some of the traders comming to the town, so the town ppl set up a bounty for it to the fighters guild... as the powerfull wolf was looking for pray outside the trade line going in that forest froze, as the tree cuting stoped too, so the 2 fighter players coulnd not work while the turnament was going... as they won and gained the membership to the fighter guild they got the job and went out hunting the wolf, that they killed in 3 encounters, as the wolf could teleport freely, it could get away from them 2 times... as the wolf was only a normal wolf only with higher wounds and a double dodge rate it could hurt the void master a bit, but with good teamwork they could slay it, and so gaining the reward from the fighter guild... as they geathered lots of money they went to the market and got themself some weapons and armors (bow, sword, leather armor)...

the Astropath who heared some stuffs while sitting at the market looking like a blind to gain some money out of ppls pity, heared that there is a treasure at another place near the montains, from where nobody has come back before... and so they got themself a ride to the place that took them 20 days, so they could learn a bit in that time (spend xp) and to see other places of the Empire of Velona... and there was the end of the day for us :)

what I made to make them more interested in this world? a MAP! as the void master got in the trade bussines they got themself a map of the empire... I made a map using "campaign cartographer 3" a very good and powerfull mapping tool...

and questions away :)

I'd be a bit miffed if I didn't sign up for DnD.

LOL...

In DnD you wouldnt want to find a trace of highly complex technology in every ruins... my chars do :D

they just want to get of this rock, but to do that they need to find technology and they want to know why they are here, so this drives them very good, even if it looks a little like DnD, but no vorry, my players played DnD too, so they are not upset about it, they like the change of setting for a while :D

This would be anti-fun for me. If I was in a RT game that was stuck pretending to be a generic fantasy game for multiple weeks, without being able to get back to my ship, I would flat out quit, and encourage my fellow players to do the same.

Aye, I play Rogue Trader to play in the 40k setting, rather than generic dark ages fantasy setting (with some hidden high tech stuff) #264.

I can think of several games, such as DnD's Eberron and Exalted, that do that sort of thing better. Stripping Rogue Trader of everything that makes it Rogue Trader doesn't sound fun at all to me.

Well, at least it sounds like your players are enjoying themselves at least. To that end I must commend you on Knowing what will be fun for your group.

Bravo sir.

its still WH40k... the setting is 40k too, just not there yet... but anyways, RT is about exploring and exploiting stuffs, well, this is an explore mission... you say its no fun, but my players like it very much, as they want to know more and more of how they got here and how they will get away from here...

most RT storries that involve a Feudal planet is like going in there, being huge and make the normal ppl look bad, here my players get a chance to see a wolrd close up where the technlogy has fallen... I still think that this setting is a good one, and my players like it, and its good when made good, even if its not reflecting from my texts...

anyways, will post more info as we go... and I get it that you think that its not your style and not fun to you... but plz dont be haters, if you dont like, then dont read, thx...

thx, and yeah, I had some problems that we need to fix, and this is a very good tool to make it happen, like having trust problems, the chars where so powerfull that they did all alone, didnt want to team up even if asked to, this way they need to work as a team or loose, and so my players like the result, that they work together, and use there stuffs for the greater good of the team... and even if the part of my storry in the middle ages will stop, and move to space, I still would like to make them feel like a team...

and 1 final thing, its easier to value the big things and the power when you fall real hard... many of the greatest movies of all times use this, you may be powerfull, or have all things in the world, but you will only know of it when you miss it the most... and thats what I'm doing here too, I could have brought them into any other setting too, could be a hive or even a forge world too, the result is the main part here, that they know that they had a lot and now they dont have it, so they are mad motivated to get it back...

we had another game day this weekend, and it was quite good again :)

they started traveling and looking for quests... the players are investigating many of the infos that are given to them, because they want to find soem technology or best even a ship to leave this place...

we had a long play, that lasted 13h long, so they did a lot of stuffs, but I wont go in detail that deep now...

so, they went after a legend that names a cave with a dragon inside, where they did want to go in, but thanx to the Astropaths tarot reading they avoided it for now, because the cards said that they will surly die if they go there now... so they went and looked for some jobs at the fighter guild and accepted 2 missions in the desert, one to escort a trader, and one to slay a lizard monster and bring back its skin, so they went to the desert and escorted the trader, and got the skin, and in the desert they meet the lizard people that live there, they where puzzled as they did not know how to react, are they mutatnts or a xeno race? should they live? or deserve to die? they just left th lizard alone, because the locals are neutral to them, so they dont want to start any wars or make trouble...

then they got 2 horses and a wagon with it... and left for the capital of the realm... they looked at the huge gates, the stone walls and went in... inside there where 2 more huge walls towering above each other as a huge multi layer tower, somewhat similar to a hive city, but in a smaller scale... the outr layer the citizens place with the guilds and the markets, the 2nd layer the nobles with the huge library of the kingdom, and last the kings castle that had steel walls towering 30-40m above any other region, and on that wall 5 statues made of steel, looking down on the city... my players had the feel that the staues are no statues, then real walkers, so naturaly they wanted to go there and look, but had to realize that they can only go there if they are famouse... so they got some more jobs from the fighters guild...

they got 2 escort and 1 hunt missions, they looked on the map and known that this missions could be linked together, so they started 1st with the escort, where they where ambused by the Charr race (from Guildwars2, but a bit different here) and with some injuries they won, big thanx to my dice as the psy user beast was swalowed by the warp... then they went on the hunt for Lox Theeth... they had no idea what a Lox is, but when they got close to there villages they seen that they are Orks, primitive orks, but still very strong enemy... my players seen that this village is going to war, and so they waited to see if they can get the amount of theeth needed... they where lucky, as many orks have fallen, but only 3 where left, 1 normal ork, 1 ork boss a huge and powerfull one, and lastly a Weirdboy, who lead the enemy attack on this village... my players evaluated that the fight will go long if they dont give a helping hand, and because they had a time limit they could not wait to long, so they attacked and it was a great battle for all, our Astropath almost died... they managed to kill off the weakened boss and weakened weirdboy too, so they got lots of money for the theeth and for the missions too, and gained a higher reputation in the fighters guild and so in the kingdom too, but its still lower as needed to go in the nobles library...

my players found some bits of info too, many strange places could be a cause of a ship or ship part, and they even heard of a legend that could be a ship thay could use, if they found it...

and so my players awaid the next gameday... happy.gif

we had another long game time this week, was ~15h long day, so we had some sleep problems at the end, but was not bad anyways...

the players went and got some more info about stuffs in the world, some info about possible ship parts scatered around a big area, and got them selfs a quest to stop 3 traders from spreding insane weapons and armors, what they did, and found a "pipe" that was a part of the cooling system of a warp engine, so they investigated it and found it on a montain top, and got some info about the other parts too, from ship logs that they powered up with the help of a las weapon power cell they found in the engine... as they looked deeper in the info they know now that this ship is a small raider that had a warp accident and crash landed here ~2000 years ago... very few of the items in the ship survived as the warp aged the items beyond repair, the hull and the ship parts survived this...

then they calculated the crashs ballistics where the parts fell, and then looked at the hull how it is, seeing that the warp drive, the plasma drive and the geller field are missing and far away from this part they went a bit pessimistic, that they cant leave, and one of the players even quit the "quest" more so because they did find out some info about there here comming, that they where teleported somehow here and out of there ship... and that they had no info and no memory about the fact that they have a mission here, and that a Magos "ordered" them here... our astropath loked deep into the mind of our Explorator and found out that the Magos was the Explorators father ( gene seed )...

The explorator got himself an old but very good power pack on his back, instead of the half broken pack that he had before, and found out that most of his powers and machine parts are still there, just covered real good... and so he and the Astropath gone to the capital city and tried to open the gates with codes of activation as they found out that this planet is a Knight world, and so they went in the highest place in the city the kings castle and used there codes to gain acces to the hidden part of the city and to order the king around as he is the puppet of the "Omnissars Angel"... they found 25 knights (1 person mini titans) and 4 huge cargo landers... our Explorator having the revange goal on all eldars he ordered the knights to go to the suspected eldar colonies south of the kingdom and eliminate all, and fixed the planets defences (5 lance) and shoot at the 10 eldar raiders they detected in orbit, who tried to fire back but could not breach the planets archeotech shield system... meanwhile our Arch Millitant got himself a archeo best revolver that he will use to kill the dragon, the only inactive member is our pilot who lost his motivation...

so yeah, it was a bit caotic, and they did find out a lot of new info, but still not all, and so they have some ideas about what happened to them, but cant see the big picture yet to see why things have been so as they where...

Well to echo the previous comment, good job for running a game that your players seem to be enjoying. HOWEVER... I also agree with the previous comments in that I think that on a very fundamental level, your current story arc is too much DnD and not RT.

well... our storry in this world has ended...

my players found all the parts needed to make the ship fly again, found a way to put it back together, with a few very strongly modified cargo haulers, and found 3000 servitors that where near the plasma generator in stasis pods...

so they got there ship and are on they way home now... and in there next adventure...

they will find there way back to the start of there mission, and get there memories back of the missions parameters, and get there reward for it...
