Plot effects and Bran

By rehlow2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I am thinking of ways to abuse Bran and I am wondering if the effects of the old revealed plot will still be in effect after I reveal a new plot. Obviously, Buidling Season's effect takes place when revealed and then it doesn't matter (i.e. it isn't undone) if Bran lets me reveal a new plot. How about Mutual Enemies though? If a new plot is revealed after Mutual Enemies is revealed does the "You and that opponent cannot declare MIL challenges against one another this round." stick around or is it null and void because that plot is no longer in play? What about Snowed Under? Is the effect "At the beginning of the standing phase, choose one kneeling character or location controlled by each player. Return all chosen cards to their owner's hands" setup when the event is revealed or when we get to the beginning of the standing phase if Snowed Under is no longer the current event it's effect doesn't happen?

Thanks,

The key words you want to look for are "when revealed".

Plots like Mutual x, Feast or Famine, at the gates, etc. Basically what happens is, when the card is revealed its "passive" ability triggers and creates an instantaneous and/or Lasting effect. Once that trigger is resolved the text becomes more or less irrelevant (which means you can swap em out).

Most everything else is a constant/passive effect, which are only in effect while the card is active.

There isnt anything tooo broken... Im fond of Feast or famine, and Valar Morghulis. the search plots are nice too if you need alot of setting up in melee...
Otherwise you might have a look at the "City" plots.

It's worth noting that most plots that are not "when revealed" are constant effects, and therefore the plot needs to be the currently active plot in order for its text to be active/applicable.

For a plot effect to persist after the plot itself has been replaced, you'll usually need both a passive activation (like "when revealed") and a set duration (like "this phase" or "during the challenge phase this round.")

Some uses for Bran were discussed in this other thread.

Thanks all. I think it is pretty clear now (and in alignment on how I thought it would work). I doubt I will figure out anything broken, and I'll be happy to just cycle through my plot deck quickly so I can play Family, Duty, Honor multiple times in one game. That plot looks really good in the right deck unless it turns out there just aren't enough good House Tully cards. The multiple plays of it all really depend on how quickly I can get Bran, keep him alive and how long the game goes.

So would a plot like Calm Before the Storm which says "this round" persist after Bran replaces it? It lacks a "when revealed" clause.

If I may add to that~

What if the CCG card "The art of Seduction" is also revealed and CalmBtS is not changed out the next round...

Like any other card, for a plot effect to persist after that plot is replaced (the plot equivalent of leaving play), it must have a set duration. In order for an effect to have a set duration, it must specify both a beginning and an end. That's how you end up with a lasting effect in this game.

So, since there is no specific beginning to Calm Before the Storm's effect, it does not create a set duration and is therefore not a lasting effect. Since it is not a lasting effect, the text on the plot must be active in order for it to apply to the game (think of it this way: the "immune this round" does not apply backwards to anything that happened in "this round" before the text became active, right?). So if Calm Before the Storm is replaced as the active plot, the immunity will not "last" until the end of the round.

The Art of Seduction created many different sources of confusion. But Calm Before the Storm would be effective as long as it is the revealed plot card, even if it gets held over from the round in which it was originally revealed.

So it looks like Mutual Enemies has a specific start "when revealed" and end "this round"

When revealed, if you have more than one opponent, choose an opponent. You and that opponent cannot declare MIL challenges against one another this round

that differentiates itself enough from Calm Before the Storm that it will persist if Bran replaces it, correct?

As far as I can tell, yes. Although, it would be possible to interpret the second sentence on its own the same way as Calm Before the Storm, the selection of "that player" when the plot is revealed creates a starting point of "when the player is targeted," similar to the way that an event would choose a target character to get +2STR until the end of the phase.
