Mi-Go Brain Case and the Sky

By Teamwrong, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

So one of my players had the Mi-Go Brain Case and wanted to know what would happen to him if he used it to switch places with a monster in the sky! We all laughed at this and people responded by saying he'd fall from the sky and die. But this did stump me a bit. He ended up not doing this but I figure I was going to rule he would suffer as if he'd been knocked down to 0 stamina and end up in the hospital, including the loss of half his items. I mean, as he's flailing in the sky falling, the investigator loses half his items during the drop!

This really got me thinking though, the Sky is considered part of Arkham, correct? As the card says to "swap places with another investigator or monster in Arkham". I never did see a clear ruling on the Sky being in Arkham or not-or maybe there isn't?

Thought this was a gem and wanted to share it with y'all and was wondering if this has happened in anyone else's game and how they handled it. Of course the real dilemma is if the player wants to switch with a monster in the outskirts! Or are the outskirts not considered part of Arkham also?

I would treat this the same as if someone wanted to use this to move to the outskirts. It's not meant to be used this way and there is no good reason to do it.

The Sky and The Outskirts are considered part of Arkham. But, there are lots of times when terminology seems to make distinctions.

As Veet said, switching with those spaces was not intended.

Yes, what exactly "Arkham" is is woefully unclear. Personally, I've been relying on the wording for monsters disappearing when gates close, which says "in Arkham, the Sky, and the Outskirts," meaning that the three are distinct. But that could be totally wrong. I'm reminded of when I used to think that you could have more than one Retainer, using as justification the passage which states that, whne you fall unconscious or go insane, you lose half your items and half your clues "along with all Retainers (if any)." I argued (with...someone on here) that this wording wouldn't make sense if you could only have one. But you can only have one. And it doesn't make sense....

i'd say you cannot brain case yourself to the sky or outskirts, for the reason that there doesn't seem to be any reason for doing it game play wise.

can you brain case spawn monsters?
can you use the brain case when you're lost in time and space?

I don't see any indication that Spawn monsters are exempt. But if you're Lost in Time and Space, you've lost your turn, so you would be unable to use the Mi-Go Brain Case. And someone else couldn't use it on you because Lost in Time and Space doesn't count as part of Arkham.
