Revisiting Dungeons - Getting back to Tamalir

By Paul Grogan, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

As has been discussed in another thread, it seems silly to not allow the heroes to even move to a dungeon location on the Terrinoth map even though they have explored the dungeon.

I'm pretty sure they should still be able to move to the location, they just dont get the XP for finding it, and they cant go in and play the dungeon levels.

However, could they actually enter the dungeon just to use the glyphs of transport to go back to Tamalir? I'm guessing not, since this isnt mentioned anywhere in the rules, but if they cant, the heroes could find themselves in a situation where they are surrounded by dungeons they have already explored and a long way from home.

Is the only way to get back to Tamalir to enter a dungeon they havent explored, and then when they exit, choose to return to Tamalir?

If this is the case (which I think it is), the heroes need to be really careful if the OL has any Lt's near Tamalir.

The first time I read the rules, I kind of got that impression also....that they would not be allowed back onto that spot, but now after reading them again, I am not so sure.

The rules says they can not enter an explored dungeon, and unless I am missing something, which I probably am, I do not see why they can not move along a path and end a week at the same dungeon they explored for purposes of moving to a new location in the following weeks.

Think about this. The players start in Tamilir. They move along one of the paths to a dungeon and either finish it or flee. They port home. They then repeat this 3-4 more times each taking a new path out of tamilir each time. Soon they would be stuck in tamilir and never able to leave as all paths now lead to explored dungeons.

I'm pretty sure it is leagl to move over a dungeon location and not go in. It just might take them a few weeks to get to town if they have explored all the near by dungeons.

Forgive me if I misunderstood something, but I wouldn't allow the Heroes to re-enter an explored dungeon to use the Glyphs of transport. THe glyphs are inside the dungeon, so they have no access to them since they can't reenter them.

I think it would be a serious disadvantage to the OL if the Heroes could go to any dungeon location they have previosuly explored, re-enter it and come out in Tamilir.

Bravo: Yes, thats correct, I dont believe the game will work if heroes are not allowed to move to the dungeon location on the map

Remy: Thanks for the confirmation. I was pretty sure (like 100%) that you couldnt because it isnt in the rules. I'm just picturing a situation where the heroes suddenly realise they are about 5 weeks from getting to Tamalir and suddenly it is under siege. But thats something they need to watch out for.

We almost got in that situation. The heros have to be careful to always leave themselves a qucik way back to Talimar. If not then you will have a bunch of heros crying. partido_risa.gif

Which is exactly what happened to us one game. The OL used the Transport Gem to drop a Lt on Frostgate, so we went and chased him up there because that city has Skills we wanted. While we were like 3 trails away, he sent the 2 Lts he had on Rivermarch right for Tamilir and brought in another one. We ended up going in the opposite direction of Tamilir to find a dungeon we hadn't explored yet and came out the week before he started rolling to raze the city.

Hopefully my players wont read this before tonight.

They are currently heading to Frostgate. I just moved a Lt to Tamalir. They were planning to go to Shika's Hut to train up.

Next turn I place a siege token on Tamalir, they move to the secret location.
Then I place another token and they spend a week training
Then I place another token - they move back to Frostgate
Because of my siege engines, I then get to roll before they move from Frostgate to a dungeon they havent yet explored.

After the constant bitching of how the campaign was ruined from session 1 for me, it would just be my luck if the heroes dont spot this and I get lucky with a roll and somehow win the campaign. Watch out for Session 8's game report.

The don't have the Staff of the Wild? Then you absolutely deserve to win that way, IMHO. The Staff should be one of the first things the heros should buy, as it reduces the threat from Lieutenants considerably.

For those who cant wait for my session 8 report - Our campaign is over.

I did point out to the heroes that I had started to siege Tamalir and that they would have to spend 1 week moving to the secret location, then another to train, then another to move back, etc.

But, they risked it, and I rolled a surge. Campaign over about 10XP short of Silver level, with the heroes in a great position.

Things they have learned: Staff of the Wild is good. But more importantly, the Tamalir upgrades. They had bought none, assuming they cost cash and they always wanted to train up. Each of them had 50 XP spare at the end and they have been to Tamalir a number of times. Next campaign, they will be certainly purchasing the improved defence cards.

Wow... that was a big risk to take. I think they deserved to lose for doing that.

And I'm amazed they didn't buy ANY of the upgrades. The heroes in our campaign haven't bothered about the wall upgrades (because so far I have been in no position to siege Tamalir), but they were very keen on the market and temple upgrades. It certainly helped them a lot.

I think the Staff of the Wild is absolutely essential for any party. Otherwiseit would be extremely hard to stop the Overlord from razing many cities and/or completing his plot. I hope your heroes have learned their lesson. gui%C3%B1o.gif

aplauso.gif Gratz. After the hope that you had lost in the campaign and the bad start it's nice to see you sneak out the win. Very devious, Overlord. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I've really enjoyed your write ups. I'm about start my own campaign in a couple weeks and the forums are a great resource but I found your play-by-play write up especially helpful to see how things play out in practice.

You've inspired me to try my own campaign write up following your format. I'll post on these boards with the link or actual write up.

Good luck on the next one and hopefully you've learned some things that will let you feel more competitive in the campaign.

Look forward to your last write up.

Hi,

congrats to Paul on the victory! I hope the heroes weren't too disappointed about the sudden ending; but I guess not since they intentionally took the risk.

Posts in this forum are very short-lived, so I recommend posting in the session reports forum at BoardGameGeek as well, either the full write-up (as Paul does), or a link to the actual diary entries (as I do).

I'm looking forward to your diary! For me, writing what happened is a lot of work, but also tons of fun. And reading other's diaries is always fun, too. happy.gif

So how's your next session report coming along then? *nudge, nudge* gui%C3%B1o.gif

I was actually more disappointed than they were, which is why I really pointed out to them "So, you'll be spending 1 week there, then 1 week back, which means I will have 3 siege tokens on Tamalir by the time you get to here, etc."

But anyway, I turned around any negative feelings by starting Campaign 2 straight after. We picked heroes, skills, equipment, and we have already started week 1. However, there is an awful lot of things I want to change before we really start. Watch for another thread soon.
