Taking the plunge into Dust.

By Anvil of War, in Dust Tactics

Forgive me if this seems like a newbie question, as I'm both new to the forum and soon new to the Dust Tactics game.

I'm looking for some advice as to what may be the best way to start off in Dust? I see FFG is making a Revised starter set for release soon. With both of the starters having unique forces, is there a "better" of the two? From a dollars standpoint, it seems the original set offers the most bang for the buck in terms of models. Is there anything I'm somehow missing that would make the Revised set a better option? How about differences in the play style of the units of both versions? I've never played the game as of yet, but the WWW2 feel of the game has me very interested. As a Mech fan, the designs seem rather cool. I saw a comparison of the Luther vs a GW Dreadnought it was surprising to see the Luther tower over the Dreadnought, alot of Mecha for the money. As a longtime tabletop gamer, its nice to see FFG also doing a full tabletop rules in development. Advice and Opinions welcomed. Thanks in Advance.

Definitely go with the Original Core Set. It's great value, with a much more complete basic game than what the Revised Core Set offers.

If you're into the WW2 feel of it, the original core set is also much more "conservative" than the revised one. The old set has squads of "normal" troops and walkers that look like tanks. The revised set strays further into sci-fi and away from WW2 with heavy armored squads punching tanks and such.

Get both, you will in the end anyway :)

Id second the recommendation of getting both, especially if you are going to be doing Dust Warfareas it looks as if it will support larger games. Ive picked up multiple core sets just for the amount of minis.

I bought the revised core set at Gencon and plan to pick up the original core set for the troop selections

I too have started with the basic set and will add the revised one ASAP. More troops, more tiles, more everything!

DUST has got the hook on me. Now GW marines are looking for the start of a trip to the warp to anybody else's place to make place...

Also, with DUST Tactics in place and DUST Warfare incoming, both a nice selection and quantity enough of troops will make for great gaming. Heck, I've even got my wife to learn the game. Bye, bye, loneliness... ;-)

I have the Core set, as well as the Boss and Kommandotrupp expansions on the way. After reading back a bit in the forum, it seems those add the most "difference" to the way the base game would be played. New Vallejo paints, new game, and it's something totally new to explore, I am excited. Thank you for the replies so far.

Try out all the new armor 3 infantry. They really change the flavor of the game as well. Oh, and welcome the game is a blast!

It's official, the Core Game and Boss/Kommandotrupp expansions arrived today.

So time for my initial reactions about the game and expansions. I've been a gamer for a very long time, and without a doubt "Dust Tactics" has been one of the most impressive packages I've taken the shrink wrap off. The miniatures to the game board pieces showed impressive quality. Heavy cardstock sections printed with a pleasing satin finish. Minor imperfections (slightly bent weapons) where easily corrected in the miniatures with a quick hairdryer and ice water bath. (A trick I learned after reading this forum.)

Both the Boss and the Kommandotrupp are also impressive, its nice that their boxes can also be used to store the troops. My wish would have been that the base game could have done that as well.

Not everything is praise however, the dice showed some flaws, the print/engraving wasn't centered on all the dice which was disappointing. How it would effect their rolling I haven't yet determined. Seems as though some custom dice via Chessex will be in order.

In all, I'm happy with my purchase, and now look forward to even bigger and better from Dust Studio/FFG in the future.

Yes, the dice are a very poor quality and it beats me why they haven't released any faction dice yet.

My set of dice, the dice from the Dust Boardgame and when Dust Tactics Revised gets here, another 6 dice. Should give me around 28 dice plus the 12 my friend has.

After that, just grab normal D6s. 5 or 6 is a hit. 1, 2, 3, and 4 are misses.

Heh, with just the Core and Cyclone I can see bigger games already. Especially if you stick with the grid playing field do you don't have to fool with the tape measure so much. Yes, less "real" that way, but it works well enough IMO.

Played my first game yesterday with an old friend of mine, both of us where completely new to the game.

We played only using the quick start rules, so it was at the most basic level of play. It was fast, brutal, and most of all, fun. I can see me enjoying this game. My friend wants to make gaming nights a more regular thing, so with some luck, I'll be able to snag a few more players into being interested. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Actually, if you want to get the same effect, I think you should count 1 and 6 as hits. The hits are on opposite sides of the die.
