Already Moribund and initiating a "Dominance:" event

By rehlow2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Can a character that is Moribund pay for a "Dominance: " phase timing event or effect before he leaves play? I don't think so, but we weren't sure last night. Here is what happened.

We determined Dominance and someone won (don't remember, doesn't matter).

Stark core deck player played Guilty and chose Tywin Lannister.

Tywin does not save. He is now Moribund.

Tywin has 2 gold coins on him and player wants to use them to pay for Call Their Bluff before Tywin leaves play.

I think Tywin will be dead before he has a chance to start the Event. Lannister player thinks he is around long enough. I didn't really press the issue because he had 2 gold coins not on Tywin anyway. So who was right?

Thanks,

Basically it works like this.

There are openings where players can play what are called "player actions".

Player actions are things which have text like "any phase:" or "dominance:" in front (NOT responses however).

Going in player order, each player can choose to make a player action, which opens up the "Player action window". Might be a good idea to open up the faq and look at the flow chart for this.

You resolve the player action as described in the flow chart. Do note inside the player action window, there is no way make any other player action. Only responses as shown in the chart. The last step of the player action window is to send moribund characters on their way.

Seeing that Guilty and Call their bluff are both player actions, neither can be played until the other is fully resolved.

In short: No

I highly suggest having a look at the timing structure as outlined in the FAQ (link in my signature). You might want to print it out (or at least print out the timing flowcharts) and keep them at hand while playing; it's really a boon, especially when you're still learning the game. Many issues can be resolved by understanding the timing structure.

A good rule of thumb is that "moribund" cards will always leave the table before anything other than a Response effect could be triggered. In your scenario, Tywin's gold could not pay for Call Their Bluff, but if you had an appropriate Response to Guilty that involved paying 2 gold, you could use him in moribund to pay for that.

I misunderstood the Moribund state then. So only Responses can be played from a Moribund card in response to something that happened. Not a "Phase:" ability because there is no Player Action Window to play it?

So, since "moribund" cards only last until the end of the current action window, and only Responses can be triggered between the open and close of an action window, Moribund cards will only be able to act as being "still in play" for Response effects.

Hope that made sense....

It did. Thank you. :-)
