Tainted Well and Shrine to Nurgle, White Lion Vanguard and Tyrion

By VileMK3, in Warhammer Invasion Rules Questions

Good day,

I have searched around the forums and couldn't quite find an answer to these two questions yet, so here I go:

1: When both Tainted Well and Shrine to Nurgle are in play and combat damage has been assigned to several units, say 3 for example, does Tainted Well deal an additional damage to each of them? Tainted Well's effect is a triggered one so it only happens once each turn (it doesn't say "whenever") but all 3 of the units essentially get corrupted at the same time. If they don't all get the damage, which one does? Does one of the players choose?

2: When a White Lion Vanguard is in play, as well as Tyrion, does he get the effect of redirecting the first point of damage twice? Once from himself and once from Tyrion's effect? Do they add up to be "Redirect the first two damage", or is he able to use it twice, but for two different sources of damage? Or does he simply not benefit from Tyrion's effect since he already has this ability?

Thank you in advance for any and all answers,

Vile

1. Tainted Well is not limited to once per turn, as it is an action and lacks the 'limit x per turn'. You can trigger it every time a unit becomes corrupted.

2. If both of them state that you are redirecting the first damage every turn, then one becomes redundant and has no effect- there is only a single point of damage that can be considered the first, and you can't really split that one point to multiple units.

Thank you for your answers,

I had figured as much for my second question, but it never hurts to ask and make sure. As for the effect of Tainted Well, while I am certain your answer is the correct one, I am now slightly confused as to when a card is considered to be a Triggered Action, as the FAQ stated that Triggered Actions can only occur once per copy of the card, per trigger, per turn.

What the FAQ basically says to define a Triggered Action is the following: A Triggered Action is denoted by "Action:" as usual and followed by the trigger. Once that trigger is met the player can chose to activate the effect (or is forced to in the case of a "Forced:" action).

This leaves me confused as to why the effect of Tainted Well is NOT a triggered one and can occur multiple times in the same turn. Before, I deduced from the FAQ's response to Glittering Tower's effect that the word "when" also implies a Triggered Action, and that the word "whenever" is the exception to the rule as this does allow Glittering Tower to be "triggered" multiple times. Is this incorrect? And if so, how can one differentiate between a Triggered Action and one such as Tainted Well?

Thank you in advance for any and all replies.

First- a triggered action (like any action) can be triggered every time its trigger has been met, unless specificaly noted (contrast with the jade acolyte, whose action ends with the 'limit once per turn' limiter). So while you can trigger it only once per trigger, there is no limit on the number of triggers occuring within your turn- for example, you can only deal a single damage to corrupted unit from a single copy of the tainted well, but should you then corrupt another unit, you can also assign him damage from the well.

Second- both tainted well and the glittering tower have triggered actions- some event must occur in order to trigger those actions. The glittering tower was perhaps a pioneer of this type of action, all the way back when they were called response actions and had a slightly different ruling, that clashed with the action of the Initiate of Sapphery, and that's how it ended up in the faq. That whenever would probably be one of the freak wording accidents FFG is so fond of.

Though, personaly I'd wait for Entropy to put his seal of approval on the second one, it's kind of late for me and I might have missed something as far as the tower goes.

Ah yes, now I see the nuance. I had misinterpreted the FAQ's wordings as the entire effect happening only once, but in fact it just happens once, per time the trigger happens.

I'll keep an eye on the threat in case Entropy chips in, but what you say makes sense.

To my knowledge, "when" and "whenever" have an equivalent meaning in the W:I rules. Everything GrumpyStranger has said in these posts seems like a correct answer to me. It seems like you were just confused about the what constitutes a trigger for a triggered action. Both Tainted Well and Glittering Tower are triggered actions. They both can be triggered infinitely many times per turn, since they have no "once per turn" condition, or another timing condition like "at the beginning of your turn". At the end of combat, if many units become corrupted by the Shrine, each one of them is a trigger for Tainted Well, so the effect is triggered that many times.

Then I understood what GrumpyStrange explained correctly.

Many thanks to the both of you.
