A Couple of Newbie Questions

By Dread318, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Yesterday, my friends and I sat down and had our first match. We came across a couple of things we weren't entirely certain about. Firstly; the Limited keyword. It says that you can only play one Limited card per round - but what about the Setup phase? For example, in my opening hand I was playing House Baratheon and I had a Location with 0 Gold cost that had the Limited keyword. Could I play both of them during my Setup phase? If not, could I play one during my Setup phase, and the other during my first Marshalling phase?

Secondly, what does attaching something to your House Card do for you? We came across several cards that said that you may attach "this" to your House Card. But we couldn't, for the life of us, find out why we would want to do that - or how it would benefit us.

Third, there was a plot we came across last night that told me to choose an opponent - then me and that opponent each drew three cards. Does that count towards both of our Draw Cap limits? Neither of us can draw more cards that turn?

Fourth, this might sound silly but what does Influence do? There are a couple of cards that say things like "Kneel 1 Influence, do X." But other than interacting specifically with things that mention Influence, does it do anything? And how do you Kneel Influence when you take the Title that gives you 2 Influence? Do you Kneel your House Card?

There was at least one more question, but I can't think of it right now - so I'll post later if I remember.

6. Place setup cards
... When placing your setup cards, you may place up
to 5 gold worth of characters and/or location cards
from your hand facedown in front of you. You
may not place attachments during this step unless
they include the “Setup” keyword in their
game text; your setup must also include valid
targets for such attachments. You may only place
one card with the “Limited” keyword during this
step
....

So you only get one Limited card during Setup, too.

You don't have to kneel anything to use the influence of the title. You - and your opponents - just remember that you have used it the one time you are allowed during the round.

No. Setup is completely separate from the first round and you may only play one card with the "Limited." keyword during setup.

Absolutely. You may play 1 limited card during setup and 1 limited card per round following it.

I'm assuming you're talking about those location cards that give you the option to attach it to your House card. Attaching it to your house card will make it an attachment and no longer make it a location type card. It really depends on where you think you may have the best chance of keeping that card because if it's an attachment then it can only be affected by cards that target attachments. You may want to keep your number of locations down because of the plot "Fleeing to Wall" which makes you choose 3 locations and discard the rest when it's revealed. Or perhaps you have the "Attack From the Sea" plot which has all players kneel all locations. If it's attached to your house card, it won't be affected by those plots or any cards that target locations.

Drawing cards outside of the Draw phase will count toward your draw cap. So yes, this plot will make you reach your draw cap if you are chosen to draw 3 cards.

Influence is considered currency that is used to pay for using certain abilities, events, etc. So yes, it's used for things that specifically mention kneeling influence to do things. There are a lot of cards that require influence to power the event or ability, so Influence can be incredibly important to have available at times.

The title you are mentioning is Hand of the King. Some players simply kneel the title to note that it's influence has been used already. There is no way to regain the 2 influence this title provides as it's only a one time use per round, so if you decide to kneel it just to help keep track of its use, keep in mind that it's not a card that you can stand back up during the Standing phase and then use it again before the round is over.

EDIT:

Sorry ktom - I had already typed a lot of stuff up and didn't want to waste it even though it warned me you had already posted. :-)

When you attach that location to your House card, it becomes an attachment instead of a location. There are cards that affect locations and cards that affect attachments. If you think your opponent is more likely to be using anti-location effects, it might be safer to play the card as an attachment. If you think your opponent is more likely to be using anti-attachment cards, it would probably be safer as a location.

It is a card that uses the word "draw," so the extra cards do count against the draw cap. So you have met the limit for the round right there in the plot phase and you could not use card effects to draw any more cards during the round. You would, of course, get the 2 cards you normally get in the draw phase - which are never included for or against the draw cap.

Influence doesn't do anything on its own. It is just a resource. So, you know, what does gold do? Nothing on its own, but it lets you pay for stuff, right? Same with influence - it lets you pay for stuff. Nothing else.

You don't have to kneel anything to use the influence of the title. You - and your opponents - just remember that you have used it the one time you are allowed during the round.

Thanks, both of you, for the massive help, but I need a little bit more clarification on the second one regarding locations and attachments. My question then, is, does this effect the way the card works? I still get the Gold if it has an income, and I still would be able to Kneel it if it had Influence?

No problem!

The text on the card remains and functions the same regardless of it being an attachment or a location.

Thanks very much. Also, is there somewhere online that has a list of every card?

Use database. You can find some links at the bottom of support page. There is also agotcards.org. Or you can click my signature.
