Rewards for players

By FailTruck, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

Im just finsihing off the first missions of my deathwatch campaing, and the Kill teams performance so far has been pretty good. They have completed one of their secondary objectives, one has become unachiveable, and they look likely to complete their primary objective. Once this is complete they will give a verbal debriefing of their mission, their pict logs will then be reviewed and evaluated will be given a review of their performance. The watch captian that gave them thier mission is an ultramarine, so this will colour his debreif.

As this was the first mission it was never meant to be a massive challenge, and as such I dont want to give them any "game" rewards (apart from reknown) but wanted some ideas for some fluffy rewards. Some thing like "mentioned in dispatches" or a pbadge or something.

Does anyone have any ideas for what I could do?

In Rites of Battle, there are endless ideas and rules for rewards, HOWEVER, medals and such should only be given for pretty frikkin' spectacular feats. A Space Marine is expected to execute their mission perfectly. They are expected to be indomitable. This is reflected in the write-ups on the awards in Rites of Battle. If this is their first mission, I would not give them an award as a whole, or at all perhaps, barring if the mission was very hard or one of the characters did something incredibly awesome.

If you still feel that a generous pat on the back is insufficient, there are always Elite Advances, I suppose. Or just give them a requisition bonus, or a free asset or something on the next mission, but be careful with that, obviously.

A gold star aka Purity seals aka cool points. Later on the pc with them most could be given some honor or reward based on having the most make a contest of it.

Purity seals would be common. Although it's slapping their back a bit too hard to my mind, on a first mission. They are Space Marines and expected to be perfect.

Unless they nailed every objective of a mission with at least half a dozen, they haven't really excelled!

Unless someone lost a fate point, they weren't in serious danger!

Basically, giving out medals now will diminish their value to players later on. If they get one on their first mission, they will expect one on EVERY mission. And when they then lock eyes on RoB, they'll be considering themselves worth of dozens of Deeds long before they really are!

Agreed with Siranui. Being over generous with laurels diminish the value of the rewards.

A purity should be hard earned, what is the use of it if they get one at the end of a mission? They'll just get another at the end of the current mission anyway.

Likewise with Experience, too generous and they'll all level up too quickly. My ol' d&d gm likes to train players to fight with what they have in different scenarios. Then they'll be prudent in their choices as XP is valuable.

My two cents of thoughts here.

Make it an albatross for them. The PC KT does well, this means Inquisitors have taken note, it means that they are now on the radar of anyone who might mean them harm; angry puritans, vengeful scholars, rival kill teams, etc. It might also mean a review from the Chaplain, which should always be an experience rife with pucker factor.
