What will the next expansion have in it??

By diablo666, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello,everyone.

I was just wondering what people thought about the next expansion being all content for RTL??

Do you think Fantasy Flight will do this because of the popularity of RTL or will the next expansion have content for people who play regular Descent??

I have to say that I am NOT a fan at all of RTL so I dont care about any content for that.

Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated.

I love the idea of the next expansion being solely RtL. It should be. ToI was an expansion really aimed at vanilla Descent without a lot of content for RtL, so if FFG was smart the next one they put out would be aimed at RtL.

Someone reported here a while ago that KW was working on the next expansion and that it would be primarily for RtL. No real details beyond that.

I think it'd be fairly certain to have new plots, levels, rumours, Lieutenants, OL upgrades. Could feasibly even have a new board. Other ideas which I understand failed to make it into RtL included henchmen and campaign-based skills, but there's no real point in speculating about this stuff until we get more information which will be a long time off.

There'd have to be some pretty impressive new content to get me to sign up for it though to be honest. Three plots and 6 avatars will last me for a very long time indeed.

I hope it's not more RtL stuff - I honestly can't see me getting it if that's the case as with small children I don't have time to game regularly let alone sit down for a campaign of any description.

I hope it will be a RtL expansion too. Whilst I don't want every expansion to be for RtL, one expansion with the same number of Avatars, Dungeons, Rumours, Encounters and Locations as the base game will increase its replayability and randomness incredibly, where the base game already has many options available.

Thumbs up for RtL additions - especially OL's based on expansion monsters gran_risa.gif Why should heroes be the only one to get a choice of thirty plus?

I must admit, I find it strange that anyone should oppose RtL. Whilst I recognise peoples' issues with it - dislike the balance (or lack of), don't have the time or number of players, etc. - but I also realise that the expansion provided a wealth of new adventures and maps. If RtL doesn't turn out to work for me then I intend to run one off random three level dungeons. I will make use of the different levels to potentially allow some degree of development between standard adventures. The advanced campaign does not have to be played in its fullest - use what is applicable for your group.

Then again, its always the new monsters and minis that I love most, and we're not likely to see these with a simple RtL expansion (unless Henchmen appear?).

However, back to the main question of this topic....

Should the next expansion be a standard one, I'd like to see a Forest 'O' Doom inspired setting, making greater use of outside areas in a standard adventure for the first time. It could open up options for interesting new terrain and allow for some different beasties - Nymphs (a monster with Taunt?) for instance

One of the things I think Descent may find difficult to do as it continues to progress is ensure that each expansion is seperate to those before. I mean, will we ever see another set containing monsters with Stealth? It would mean duplicating rules and contents. Can the game remain independently creative, or to do so will it need to develop what has gone before? And RtL only adds to the issue because it has to assume ownership of a previous product and splits the product line in two...and as a result, and as this post shows, the target consumers, too.

Here lies the conundrum for the creators...probably gui%C3%B1o.gif

I hope that the next expension will be an add for regular Descent, I'm not a RtL fan......

I hope that FFG will made smalls expensions like runebound! Like pack of card (Treasurs or trachery or....), pack of monsters, quest booklet or things like that!

What I'd like to see would be a quest book combining elements of various expansions, including RTL. Imagine a dungeon, that starts above the ground, where you fight some Deep Elves, then descend to the dungeon filled with Kobolds and Lava Beetles while running from the crushing wall and dodging lava, defeating a chaos beast or two and then ascending again to the final confrontation with the dreaded Ice wyrm in the middle of an ancient forest.

How does that sound to you?

It sounds good if you're the Overlord. gran_risa.gif

An RtL expansion would probably be best. Without having to print a new board, they could probably throw in far more plots.

Though personally, I think that an expansion for RtL should include a revised rulebook. Due to all the rules changes/additions implemented (or still just needed), having one document rather than three (1 original book, 2 FAQ/Support sheet, 3 rulebook with new rules from an expansion) [or more] would make the game far more player-friendly.

When talking to the FFG people at GenCon last year, they mentioned more of a campaign "book".

I also suggested to them a campaign "contest" would be cool. I had a really cool idea for a campaign.

I actually don't want another expansion. I'd rather have a new edition of the game. The core mechanics are great, here's my wishlist:

-revised/corrected rulebook with all errata included

-revised wording for abilities (clarifying which ones stack, how abilities interact, etc.)

-tweaking of some heroes and skills

but most of all a merge between RtL and vanilla (using the same monster stat cards for each, ways to use vanilla quests in RtL and vice-versa, more consistent rules between vanilla dungeons, RtL dungeons, and outdoor encounters).'

But hey, that's just me.

I'd rather have a "living" rulebook available in downloadable PDF format. One that gets updated with every expansion and FAQ update. It doesn't need to have a pretty layout squezed into a even number of pages ready for the printers. Just give me a readable format with a good TOC and index.

I wish it could be Avatar figures gui%C3%B1o.gif Because "special monsters" need special care, stoutness and attention not to be only substituted by normal monster figs. different theirs. Sooner I wrote about ancient catacombs under towns (in cathedrals) as new kind of dungeons, rumors or traveling ways ( in one direction or either way ) to game. Through which (catacombs) can easily add new map to game or simply make some Gate through that be possible pass after executed certain conditions (reach silver level of game, complete special quest, gain item) - as passage on new map.

1.) Avatar figures
2.) Catacombs
3.) Gates between map boards

This little Xandria wants rules for the Delve, first of all - a string of RtL dungeons without the OverLand map.

Other than that, Xandria wishes for more RtL dungeons, more plots and avatars and lieutenants and especially for RtL content taking into account the previous expansions.

Also, if a new edition of the game solved with clarified rules and improved mechanics came out, there just might be enough cash in my pocket to afford it.

A cards-only expansion might be nice, and affordable too.

I'd be fine with a 2nd Edition, granted that they also produce an upgrade pack to take your 1st Edition game and update it the 2nd Edition. Kind of what they did for Talisman.

personally if the next set was for the RTL campaign I might not even buy it none of my friends are keen on RTL... however if it contained some rules for applying RTL advancement to regular descent, new treasures are a must, and some heroes (which rtl was sorely missing) and maybe randomized dungeon tables. Essentially RTL only content will be a no go for me and my group.

And yeah as far as a second edition goes I think an upgrade pack would be inorder... I really can't see what they would change other than a complete rules revision to clear up some holes... which all the existing physical aids should be compatable with.

I actually think an "ADVANCED DESCENT" book might be a verry awesome release containing the complete reviesed and expanded rules set, faqs, adventure design and randomizing systems, and some dungeon advancement rules for "heroquesting" Descent, hero creation system, and hey why not throw in a CD version of the scenario editor! (please oh please let it be done).

I think that an expansion mainly focused on RTL would be nice. Here are a couple of thoughts:

1) More Overlord Plots

2) More LT's and LT figurines included

3) Deeper Siege Rules. Give the towns a bit more options like maybe the Overlord didn't raze the city but is now using it and it can become part of a new City Encounter that the heroes can undertake to get back or uncover part of the the Overlords plot.

4) Incorporate Feats

5) Balance the Overlord Deck

6) Balance Copper/Silver/Gold and Overlord Final Dungeon

7) More Monsters and rules to let the Overlord pick his mix of Monsters better

8) Campaign Book with dungeons, outdoor encounter 'dungeons' and city encounters (see 3 above).

Anyways, those are just some of my ideas as to what could be included in the next Descent expansion.

Making an expansion for an expansion is always problematic, as your are losing some of your user base each step along the way no matter what you do, and you don't gain any (or few) new customers.

Because of that I was thinking whether a "second" Road to Legend would be feasible. One that can work on its own, while minimizing the amount of duplicate stuff. If they included as much new stuff as possible, it could possibly work as its own box as well as an expansion on RtL.

What would need to be duplicated?

  • The rulebook, obviously. This would be an excellent chance to put a new version together will all the errata and clarifications.
  • Some of the more generic tokens and map pieces. Villagers, Sleep tokens, the dungeon end portal.
  • Some of the more basic cards, e.g. a "Lost" encounter in the encounter deck. Some of the generic avatar upgrades.
  • The dice. Not a bad thing at all IMHO, getting a second set.

What could be new and interchangeable with RtL?

  • New dungeons, encounters and locations. 40+ new dungeons anyone?
  • New outdoor map tiles. Variety doesn't hurt at all here.
  • New lieutenants. No need to have the Farrows as the generic set, could be all new.
  • New avatars and plots. Obvious.
  • There could even be a complete new map.

I'd buy this any day, as the duplicate material would be minimal. Whether it would be viable of course depends very much on how successful RtL was in the first place (of which I have no idea whatsoever). It very probably would still not do as well as RtL, but at least you wouldn't need to own it in the first place.

Probably just wishful thinking.
