Question about this ship.

It's a transport, plain simple, straightforward.

Why does a ship this colossally huge have to use the Lathe-pattern (RT pg 201) with only 40 output [or other such small powerplant]. While I understand that you can use the Auxilliary Plasma Banks (ItS pg 159), it seems illogical in the extreme to use such a small powerplant in conjunction with so many small and volatile powerplants on such a vast ship with such huge quantities of space available.

Unless this has been errata'd somewhere and I've missed it, does anyone have any insight on this particular subject?

You pretty much hit it on the head. It has to use power plants for transports, but if you want more power, expect to explode on critical hits.

There is an "errata" in the BFK errata thread (here) for a slightly larger transport engine.
