Just bought Princes of the Sun ... now what?

By NDRW, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hey all,

I'm relatively new to AGoT; I have the core set and my friend and I just play with the 4 pre-con decks. I just bought Princes of the Sun to bring Martell into our games, and was a little dismayed that i didn't come with a pre-con deck, or at least a sample deck list. I was never the best at deck construction when I played Magic years ago, and I've never done so with AGoT. Could any of you more experienced players give me some pointers on how to make a Martell deck that would be on-par with the decks included in the Core Set?

That seems a bit tricky b/c the PoS plots aren't necessary good for Martell decks. Threat from the North is a Targ plot, Alliance is only useful when running an important OOH card, and Attack from the Sea is just not a very good plot (though it has its uses if you are only running non-kneeling effect locations, +1 gold locations and Seas). Given that you'll want a 40 card deck and you'll have to use those plots if you have no other CPs and have no intention of messing with the Core decks, and you don't want the deck to be OP compared to the Core decks, I would do 10-11 Locations, 20ish characters and 9-10 attachments and events, maybe something like this...

Characters (19)
1x Ser Jorah Mormont and 1x Brienne of Tarth (so Alliance actually has some point)
1x each Martell character

Attachments (4)
1x Pinch of Powder
1x Rusted Sword
1x Art of Diplomacy
1x Taste for Blood

Events (6)
1x Parting Blow
1x Wars Are Won With Quills
1x When I Woke
1x He Calls it Thinking
1x Red Vengeance
1x Blood for Blood

Locations (11)
You're missing Streets and the 2-cost discount locations that all the other Houses get in the Core; luckily you have Palace Fountains or you can put in an extra Sea.
1x Spear Tower
1x Old Palace
1-2x Summer Sea
2-3x Palace Fountain
1-2x Water Garden
1x Lord Doran's Chambers
2x Dornish Fiefdoms

Give it a try and see if you think it is balanced, you may need to mess with it just a bit. I would also suggest picking up a copy of Ancient Enemies, it will give you a Fury plot for each House. Good luck, hope you guys enjoy playing Martell!

Thanks, hopefully I can get a game in today and try it out. I also have Sacred Bonds, so I might toss in some Heralds of the Sun instead of Ser Jorah and Brienne. Or Jaqen Hagar =)

Question though: why 40 cards? The core decks have 45. Did you feel 45 would make the deck OP compared to the core decks?

Regardless, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Lol, cause its been so long since I played the Core decks that I can't remember how many cards they have.
