Worlds! So what happened??

By f7eleven, in Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game

Thanks! I almost bailed on it and played something else at the last minute, but I figured it'd be fun at the least. The DE/Hekarti matchup was one of a couple that had me worried, and is a large part the reason for the three Pilgrimage in the deck. It certainly doesn't "solve" the problem of the quest, but does at least give you an out that lets you pull off the combo if everything else is running smoothly. In the fairly limited testing we did, the matchup proved to be pretty chaotic.

There are a lot of different ways you can go with the basic Glory/Thrower combo, so it's very possible there's another version that's better. I had many, many lists!

Re: Clamatius: Mill does certainly struggle against rush, but I think it is in the 50/50 range against a lot of good decks. It's just very draw-dependent since there aren't all that many mill cards. Often the distribution of Plague Monks and/or Frenzied Witches will more or less determine the game against a mid-tempo deck. The decks that tend to have the best unit removal (Chaos and DE) are also kind of vulnerable to milling naturally.

Congrats, Tim! Couldn't happen to a better player, a nicer guy, or a better rep for our beloved W:I! Well done, sir!

And Cyberfunk was at GenCon this time? Dang, now I wish I could've gotten an earlier flight home. Would've been great to meet you.

I'm extremely pleased that DE won though, as they've been a favored race of mine for a while. Playtesting has helped my enthusiasm of them a bit, also. And I've always like the bit of milling that they bring to the table. Coolness.

And yes, sadly, it sounds like their prize support is still super lame. Oh well. Just have to play for the glory of it all, I guess. :(

Wow that prize support IS awful.

Back in SC I ran these tourneys for this game. Players pooled money a week ahead of time. I would take the money and buy 3 minis with them. Paint each one Gold (most expensive or detailed), Silver (usually a champion), or Copper (least expensive usually just a regular unit). Throw an appropriate colored wash to bring out the detail. Finally, I would sign each one before applying a glossy protection.

Now that I am in Orlando I don't have my group of 24 players to support tourneys to gather enough money for a single mini. Hope they continue running strong back at my old home. Had a lot of fun with this game and met a lot of innovative and cool minds.

I'll agree that the prize support left a bit to be desired. I think FFG has basically passed on trying to make a semi-competitive tournament scene for the game. Up to them, of course. I was expecting a bit more than the 20 people we got... something in the 30-40 range. But, there was good variety in decks and everybody was a great sport! Thanks to everybody who played!

It didn't help that FFG overlapped the W:I tourney with the AGoT Joust tourney. I REALLY wish they would stop doing that, as I'd like to play in both. As it was, I ended up playing in the AGoT Joust.
If they'd schedule the W:I tourney on the same day as the AGoT Melee tourney, I think they'd end up with more players for W:I.
FFG, are you listening?

I totally agree. I know there were 3 or 4 from my play group that played thrones instead.

This doesn't surprise me at all tho.

I have never had to run a tourney at Gen Con. I am sure they have to buy window slots for the events. I think anyone smart enough to design board games, card games and rpgs can handle the simple running of a tourney. I just think Gen Con was a bad place to hold the tourney. Nothing FFG could do about the overlap.

The prize undoubtedly should have been better. Shame on you FFG I am pretty sure you have enough money to have trophies like the Golden Demon award.

The prize for First was at least as good as last year, basically the same. Last year the gave out a lot more to the other top finishers. I know there were uncut sheets, wooden damage tokens, playmats and the like but I dont know exactly what went where. This year second place got an uncut sheet from LOTR and that was that. I wish I'd have been thinking about this better, I would at the very least let him take the W:I uncut sheet instead. Anyway the event was a lot of fun and everyone I played was really cool. Hope to see you guys again in the future!

i hate uncut sheets :-/

I do not like this kind of prize support. WHI is not really competitive, so why should not just everybody get something?

For the german championship we had even more extreme distribution with 300/200/100 € in games for the first three and nothing for all other people (who won some quali tournament before).

Pretty lousy price support. I mean how much would it cost ffg to give out at least 1 or 2 ffg games. Even if it isn't WHI related, a copy of LotR lcg or Blood Bowl should not be a problem to give out. I'm very disappointed to hear that and despite visiting gencon and play strong opponents there isn't anything that could attract more players. I mean it's not a gencon side tourney for whi, it is world championship.

Jsut know it was as bad for aGoT with 3X the number of players...so don't feel bad! I think they are hiring a OP (orgainized play) person, so maybe that will help?
