On that note, do you know how the Emperor managed space travel during that time?

He created the Navis as well from memory, I could be wrong on this point.
I greatly enjoyed the book.
All things considered... its freakin' 40k. While I enjoy templar calix, techpriest secutors, and all the masses of shapechanging alien races that are infiltrating the Imperium at any given time, half the fun is actually seeing the iconics. Space marines (loyalist and chaotic), greater daemons, tau battlesuits, ork nobz, necrons... facing these kind of enemies are thrilling, because they viscerally remind you that you are actually playing in 40kland, and not any old sci fi RPG. Nearly all new alien races, besides the sluagth, tend to be just the generic sort that will fit fine into every other sci fi setting.
