Upgrade Pack Question

By Avii, in Talisman

Hey guys,

I have the Black Industries version of 4th ed and I know for the expansions that I need to get the upgrade pack. My question is, were there any changes to the board/ details in the spaces? If there were do I really need to fix up my board?

It's not only the text... There may be problems with the size and the corner expansions, too!

Go to:http://www.talismanisland.com/downloads.htm
In the middle of the site you will find overlays for the 4th edtion board.

You can better buy the new talisman revised edition boardgame, instead of the upgrade pack.

The upgrade pack don't have everything.. and you are still stuck... with your old board from black industries..

keep your money, and buy the new talisman 4.5 boardgame..gui%C3%B1o.gif

That's my advise..

Grab Upgrade Pack and ignore board changes. Only thing you'll see is less Fate in the game, which for me is purely a positive. Only thing I took from the new board is Village roll that turns you Evil. Plus numbered triangles for stats > cones. And you'll probably get it for half the price of R4th base game.

Avii...

You can easily upgrade your Black Industries board by going to TalismanIsland.com or BoardGameGeek.com (Talisman page) and finding the graphics that you can print out and apply to specific spaces. Save your money and DON'T spend extra re-purchasing the whole game all over again. I've used the upgrade package since nearly day one, once I found myself in your position. I guarantee with a little effort and a home printer, you will not suffer any loss whatsoever.

Perhaps the only notable difference will be cones used instead of tokens for Strength and Craft. Personally, I don't like the cones and am glad to not have to hassle with yet more its'n'bits on my side of the board that aren't as clear to see as plain ol' text/numbers.

Alright everyone thanks for the advice. Upgrade pack it is! Also the board changes are not that big of a deal for me. I just wanna get my old game ready for the new expansion and Highlands!

I actually kind of regret that I bought the upgrade pack and not the new game.

The things that you find in the new game, and not in the upgrade pack:

- Complete ruleset. (The upgrade pack has a rules change sheet, which is incomplete)

- New board. The new board has all the revisions and is larger. The locations are already a mismatch for the Dungeon and the Highland (arrows pointing towards the wrong zones), and I can only wonder how the Dragon middle board will look like on the smaller BI board.

- The cones. While not as much of an issue, the tidbits from BI aren't clear to read. When in front of yourself, sure, but when checking someone's craft from across the table, there's no way, while it seems pretty clear with the cones. alternatively, you could count each bit as one, but the numbers might then be confusing.

Of course the complete boardgame is more expensive than the upgrade pack, but if you buy the complete boardgame, you can also give your old copy to a friend, instead of having a box that needs everything to play, except for the actual board.

I agree with thels.

@avii

If you really want to complete the talisman base game, then i hope you change your mind.

Unless you don't care about it off coursegui%C3%B1o.gif

Personally, i hate it, if i don't have the cones, or the fate descriptions are not on the board, or the size is different etc

All those things are easily resolved if you buy the revised edition.

Think about it, before you have spent your money..gui%C3%B1o.gif

For what's been mentioned here about the advantages of the 4ER box vs. the upgrade pack, all of what's missing in the upgrade can be acquired for free except the Cones (including the most recent manual and FAQs... which even 4ER buyers have to get). And those cones can be bought separately from 100s of places across the internet and the planet for little change. And a bigger board (by not much at all) is not a plus.

Avil... if you ever find something wanting in your upgrade pack, just drop back here and ask about it. I'm betting those of us who know can set you up with little to no hassle.
