By pwvogt, in X-Wing

If this "Wings of Star Wars" is successful, I wonder what are the chances of FFG eventually making a third fighter combat game ("Wings of War" being the first) based on the Battlestar Galactica universe, with Colonial Vipers vs Cylon Raiders instead of Rebel X-Wings vs Imperial TIEs.

I paused the vid in a couple good places and compared the length of an X-Wing to the players' first two finger joints, and then compared the SSB version to my own; FFG's are definitely bigger, by as much as a third. Bad news for people wanting to create mods of SSB ships, but good news for model detail.

Oh yeah - do watch the whole vid IJT linked. It really shows the game mechanics in operation.

The vid was awesome. I already have 4 people in my meta waiting for the release of this. I'm hoping they will also release more models, and even larger cruiser class ships as well.

Here's another view.

Also, it sounds like there isn't any certainty as to how many ships are in the starter. The rep at Gencon apparently wasn't sure what exactly comes in the starter, according to one person who demo'd the game there. Also, Thoughthammer.com is listing the pre-order price at $26.77, which lends support to my hunch that $39.95 is the MSRP, and some places may sell it cheaper.

We don't KNOW, but it would seem that there are six TIEs and three X-Wings. That was the layout shown in the board setup @ Gencon, and you'd assume they'd want to put their best foot forward. Someone else, don't recall who, said that's what he'd heard the layout was as well.

I hope we can get it for a little cheaper! good ol' Noble Knight would be a good place to start, and I'd love to start giving them some business again after the demise of... well, everything I enjoyed buying. llorando.gif

I would hope that there would be that many ships, and that additional ships would be inexpensive. I can imagine some epic battles on your dining room table!

Yes, I sense some fun ahead, Vaughn.

Additional planes for Wings of War seem to be $12.95. Each. Then we probably have to tack on an extra dollar for King George. Plus, I see that many of those planes are out of stock... which means the good ol' 'collecting frenzy' may still be something of a concern.

Game-wise, I wonder how necessary the whole 'altitude' mechanic is going to be in this game. I don't really fancy having to change the height of all my fighters' sticks all the time. That's just a minor quibble, though... still excited.

Be interesting to see if there will be some sort of competive side to the game,by that i mean things like a championship, cuz you know some fans will want that sort of thing.

FFG has a pretty big event center, so I wouldn't be surprised if they held some sort of event there.

EDIT: I guess you can edit your post until someone else has posted after you.

Actually it's a time limit of about 5 minutes.

You can circumvent it, though, if you know the correct link:

Start with the 'Report to moderator' link and replace the name of the active server page with the one for editing: "edge_foros_editar.asp".

Thanks!

I wasn't too thrilled by Wings of War, but this appeals to me. I can't wait to hear more info about it. I'm sure, though, there will be much grumbling when the number of ships released in the base box is revealed. Everything is expensive these days and it's just getting worse.

The game sure looks pretty. I think I'll go buy that starfield fabric right now...

I may do the same... if those extremely attractive gaming mats they're using are the same as the Wings of War ones, they'll be $39.95 each! sorpresa.gif

So is the game NOT in fact coming with some kind of playing surface? Do we know this with reasonable certainty?

Nope, it's just pure speculation at this point. It would be nice of 'em (and not too expensive) to toss in a simple fold-out poster map, though. I hope they do... gaming is all about the immersion for me, and a bunch of X-wings flying around over a flat, wooden surface just doesn't cut it. lengua.gif

I'm gonna go try and see if Wings of War comes with a poster map...

[EDIT: It doesn't look like it. 'Course, this is a different game - who knows what they're gonna do...]

[EDIT #2: There's a new video up! Turns out, you get one X-wing and two TIEs in the box...]

I was afraid of that.

It definitely lines up rather neatly with the '$12.95 per ship' model.

I'm sure I'll convince myself to get the intro game, but I'm gonna have to think long and hard about whether or not to get too involved in this...

Aieeee!!

Yah, me too. Likely on both counts.

I've got some floor tiles that I might look into painting. Maybe I can make them look like star fields. Would be a lot cheaper, and easy to lay them out into a big star field.

The Emperor: You want this, don't you? The hate is swelling in you now. Give in to your anger. With each passing moment you make yourself more my servant.
Luke: No.
The Emperor: It is unavoidable. It is your destiny. You, like your father, are now mine.

I was hoping for more content in the starter as well. Oh well. As for the "map" idea, depending on the size of the space needed, we might be able to use scrapbook paper. It comes in 12"x12" sheets and I know I have seen star-field / space-like patterns before.

I think I'm in for the starter regardless and a few expansion sets at the least. Like he said in the latest video link - "It's Star Wars!"

I actually could not find the video link. What I hoped was the link took me to a sorta dead page. I'll try again later.

A question to ask, though, if anyone has the ear of FFG, is: I.J.Thompson stated that the bases have drop-down spec-sheets for different craft. SO, assuming this is true, are there several different craft sheets for each fighter mini in the starter? This is important because, if the starter only has three flippin' fighters, if I get one and Vaughn in Rochester gets one, if we link up do we double our range of playable ships - or is it like a SWM starter, where we now have two Grievouses and two Obi-Wans?

The link was in IJThompson's post (#41) in the Edit #2 line. The copy/paste is

Going by what I'm seeing in The Hopeless Gamer's photos, it seems like you spend points for either a Rookie Pilot, Red Squadron Pilot, Luke Skywalker, or whatever else is offered in the game. You grab the card to reference stats, and grab the 'chit' (I'm calling it a 'chit' - I don't know what it's actually called), and attach it to the base of your fighter. So that one X-wing model you have could be a Rookie, or it could be Luke Skywalker... all depending on how you've spent your points.

But again, this is just what I'm getting from reading the cards, and looking at the models.

[EDIT: I name-dropped Luke Skywalker there because of this from the Product page: X-Wing's advanced rules let you spend setup points to allot resources to your ship or ships, so whether you enter the fray with a seasoned ace, an anxious rookie, or even Luke Skywalker himself, you'll face a range of compelling options before you even fire up your engines.]
