Noob question on Winter

By Jerak, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Just started playing and am researching different decks and i have a very noob question. How do you know when it is Winter/summer? for example if someone is playing a Greyjoy Winter choke deck vs a Martell Summer deck how do you know what season it is? what cards make it that season and how would one reverse the current season?

Black and White Ravens from Song of Summer and Winds of Winter make it summer and winter. Also, Crown of Winter, Crown of Meereen, and the crown from the Bara box (I forget the name) can make it winter and summer.

Edit: Man, thorondor bet me to it. Here's my answer anyway.

The main season cards are the Ravens . The Black Raven makes it Summer, the White makes it Winter. Each will discard any other raven attachments from play.

It gets a bit more complicated with the Crowns: Crown of Winter , which makes it Winter unless the Black Raven is in play, Crown of Meereen which makes it Summer unless the White Raven is in play and Crown of Azor Azai which can make it either season if the opposing raven isn't in play. While the crowns don't work while the opposing season raven is in play they can work with each other. A crown of winter and a crown of meereen in play would mean it was both Winter and Summer, for example.

If the links don't work (the board software is a bit crappy) you can search for them at http://agot.dbler.com/. Hope that helps.

But what happens if no season changing cards have entered play yet?

Than it´s neither summer nor winter. Some cards ask for that requirement.

What's important to understand is that there are no rules for summer and winter -- the mechanic is entirely fueled by card effects. You have cards that say it is summer or winter, and you have cards that play off this with texts like "If it is summer ..." All you need for playing with the seasons mechanic is on cards.
