The (Expanded) Universe, or a discussion on the focus of the game

By JerusalemJones, in Star Wars: The Card Game

Id imagine if they followed the cannonized novella's then eventually yeah wed get to see the Yuuzhan vong. But since they are starting from the New Hope time frame im hoping they stick with all the great stories and stuff instead of making pointless chewbacca gets kidnapped and your team has to rescue him non cannon story scenarios lol. Following the time line events of the classic and EU would be awesome and wed always have new scenarios that we are familiar with and can get excited about the EU characters that we would get to see.

What? Nobody wants to see the Yuuzhan Vong? happy.gif

If you really dont know ill catch ya up a bit, They were a race of warriors from the deep regions of Wild Space. For years they were kept at bay by Grand Admiral Thrawn, but after he died they invaded the New Republic/Empire territories. They were religious zealots who hated technology and used organic ships and weapons, like Thud Bugs which were insect like projectiles. Its been awhile but if i remember correctly they were immune to the force but i could be wrong, its been a looong time since i read the series, plus its 6am so im not fully awake yet lol.

They had some cool aspects to them and also some what the heck over powered elements in the story line but it still would eventually be cool to see them in game as aside from WOTC Star Wars miniatures i dont believe they have been in any other star wars games.

Sounds... unoriginal. I am not sure if this Vong race was originally a SW idea, but I have seen this type of thing enough in other science fiction games/stories/ etc to the point of where such an idea implanted in a background makes me nauseous.

"Ohh creepy bio-luddites who use biological weapons that emulate technology! Run! The Tyranids/ Starship trooper bugs/ Marvel Brood/etc. etc. ad nausaeum are coming to attack us!"

Doesn't exactly sound like something that'd make me think of Star Wars. Who's invention are they? Have they been part of the Clone Wars show or did they make their appearance in a novel?

The Yuuzhan Vong have been around since 1999. They are a novel invention that first appeared in R.A. Salvatore's Vector Prime , set 25 years ABY, but they were since revealed to have made incursions into the Galaxy in or around the Classic era, studying the technology of what was the dominant force in galactic society at that time (the Empire), in preparation for their eventual conquest.

I agree, they don't really feel like Star Wars at first, but having been aware of them for half my life now, I've long since made my peace with their existence. :P

While i readily agree that the Vong dont truly and never really have felt like a Classic Star Wars Element and the idea has been done to death in other classic Sci Fi stories. They did have some cool aspects. I liked Nom Anor.

So, R.A. Salvatore it is. The guy who brought us Drizz't Do'Urden gran_risa.gif
Interesting - thanks for the info!

If I remember correctly, the Vong were extragalactic, not from Wild Space. The one thing I liked about that series was that it changed how stagnant Star Wars novels were becoming. Put your heroes in mortal risk, but eventually they'll come through unscratched, time and again. That kind of changed when the Vong dropped a moon on Chewbacca's head, the Solos lost one of their kids, Coruscant got conquered, etc. Anyway, my original comment was sort of off-the-cuff, I wasn't really expecting that anyone would want to see them here, I think the classic stuff is still the more appropiate setting for the game.

Well I, for one, loved the Vong series (New Jedi Order). Maybe that's because I'm very focused in my reading: Star Wars or scientific (entomological/arachnological) journals. Anyway, I think the cooperative system will work great for one or two Vong Force Packs, but that's about the limit of it. I think it would be interesting to put out there, though. I think for that one, you could swing it without making a whole new spin-off. Just use the Rebel decks and then add the Solo Children and Mara and you pretty much have a decent enough deck to show what fighting the Yuuzhan Vong is like.

More generally, however, I feel that although I love EU it may not be a great fit for this game. That is to say, I think that era-specific EU could work, but I'm not sure I want to see this game go back to the Old Republic or forward to the Legacy of the Force or Legacy eras. I think they should work out the OT and slowly add some concurrent EU like Bounty Hunter wars (which was mentioned above and I have to say I'm a BH fan), the Timothy Zahn material, and Shadows of the Empire. Maybe after that they could try a PT spin-off and include some of that EU, though that will be a lot tougher since the Clone Wars series is really messing up the canon. I'm really upset that Traviss couldn't finish the Imperial Commando books (but that's a topic for another thread). I don't know what to say about CW as far as this game goes. I like CW, I own the first two seasons, I'm looking forward to season IV, but I don't think I want to see a card game about it. I'm not sure what it is about it that makes me opposed to a card game version.

To sum it up, I think starting with the OT is a great move and there's plenty of material there to keep us occupied for a while before worrying about EU. The EU surrounding the Rebellion era will be really interesting to see incorporated. I don't think I would buy packs that extend too far into other eras (except maybe a Vong pack).

I think the CW and PT stuff would be better suited for another game entirely. Perhaps that will be the era they use for the VS style game. Anything EU OT and EU after OT would work well for this game as it is a Living Card Game, so each scenario is a new chapter and seriously you can only milk the OT so long before it just gets boring or repetitive. Classic EU Era, New Jedi Order era , Legacy of the force era. and Fate of the Jedi Era are all great sources of story and characters they can pull from and keep the game going for as long as they want.

At this point id rather them not bring the PT or CW into this format since they opted to start with OT.

I think i woulda been fine with both if they started with the PT for this game but as they didnt it would feel like going backwards. lol

Aha! This is the thread I've been looking for! I've been giving entirely too much thought to just this subject for a while now, it's good to see I'm not the only one thinking years into the future for this game when it hasn't even come out yet.

I think the main point that has me doubting how this whole thing is going to be expandable is the card backs from all the photos I've seen of the game demo at Gen Con. The Rebel deck has the Rebellion crest on its back, and the Empire encounter deck has the Empire crest. So if you start introducing Prequel-era guys or Yuuzhan Vong, they'll have the wrong card backs. I just keep thinking that, to bring out cards from different eras would make the game less of a living experience than, for instance, LotR is shaping up to be.

I think I'll just hope that those aren't the finished card backs, and they were put on purely for demo purposes...

They have already stated that the art isnt finished, card backs can change pics can change ect as its demo.

Thing about the encounter cards is that like with LOTR they can and most likely will have a encounter set identification icon on the front. Now they can get away with the backs if they wanna be lazy. But they can always change the backs for different era sets. Which could in a way play as a new game but still be the same game. Remember that the original Star Wars ccg used the same card backs for the phantom menace expansions as the classic era which was the imperial crest and the rebellion crest.

I think they might be better off using lightsabers or something if they r planning to go far in the expanions. But for myself it wouldnt bother me if the backs were rebel and imp crests despite eras. It wuld be cooler too make them custom to the era, but it wouldnt bother me.

Id rather them give us plently of awesome encounter decks, characters, allies ect from every era classic - fate of the jedi. Prequel stuff would be cool too but i also could take it or leave it.
