Badab War Questions

By siege40k, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

Hey guys!

Long time lurker, first time poster. I am looking at starting a Deathwatch game and was wondering how feasible it would be to have it occur just at the start of the Badab war. Basically with the PC's embroiled in the start-up, execution of, and culmination of the total war effort. I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or if it were totally infeasable. I am not sure if it is a good idea because of the massive amounts of Astartes etc, that would be around.

With that in mind I would need to make rules for at least some of the chatpers who would be involved in that conflict.

The other idea is to use Rynn's World (basically right after the destruction of the Crimson Fists fortress monastery) and set the kill team to eliminating priority targets and to help liberate and assist the Crimson Fists.

Any thoughts or input would be appreciated, like what types of scenarios work or what you guys have had success with. I was also thinking about doing a SG1 type thing where the Kill Team is located statically somewhere (whether it is a ship or base) and send them out on missions etc.

Thanks,

Siege

Hi,
I don't think it would be an issue. The group wouldn't be a deathwatch team, but that's easy to work around. You could have a Secessionist party, assembled as by Huron as a special task force or a Retaliator type squad that works both with and above the Tyrant Legion.
Or another fun idea, is have a Loyalist team, and through the adventure they start to uncover Hurons forces stealing and manipulating the geneseed, and having forces well above and beyond the standard codex.
I really think this has LOTS of possibilities.

I am currently running a camp during this war. the PCs are all novamarines that have been helping the firehawks in there missions. they are currently getting ready to board the Red Harbinger and retake it from from the Mantus Warriors while the rest of the Fire Hawk fleet is engaged with the Mantus Warriors fleet at Galen.

That's pretty muc hexactly how I started my campaign, so I can confirm that it can work :D It IS very harsh though, lots of astartes on astartes combat which is rarely kind to those that enter it.

SM on SM action is brutal, but the players are loving it. I love how they are being augmented to other chapters while they waiting for the rest of there chapter shows up. I kind of wish I had them be DW and some of them be from the rebeling chapters, so there would have been that drama, who should I fight for the DW or my home chapter.

It's an interesting thought, but note that Deathwatch is really centered around well… the Deathwatch. Doing runs with a limited chapter set or outside of the Reach are things I've wanted to try for a while, so I'm curious how it would turn out though. Right now I'm writing a chapter supplement for Minotaurs, which is forcing me to research the Badab war quite a bit.

Forge World put out a two-volume history of the Badab war available here and here . You may find them useful for your upcoming campaign, if you can afford them. If you are in the US your local GW store may carry them and will definitely order them for you. You can also find an unofficial Badab war book written by Bell of Lost souls here . It was written prior to the Imperial Armor books, but is still very useful.

It could easily be a DW kill-team in the Badab War. The DW is everywhere, they could have had a secret Watch-Station near the Maelstrom and been involved in heavy anti-xenos missions while the Maelstrom Zone Chapters predominantly dealt with Chaos. Personally I'd find it fun to throw in some weird xenos and investigatory missions as things escalated and the DW realized that they actually had forces behind enemy lines that could help out.

I've been thinking of running a similar game for awhile, but my current Jericho Reach game is still going strong, so not following up on it for awhile.

I have volume one of the Badab war and it's beautiful, but pricey. If you want to save a lot of money I would use the Warhammer Wiki's they have all the source you need. I was just on there the other day and some one just updated all the badab stuff!!! Although I love my book I wish I would have just used the wiki's and BOL's online supp.

I started working on a Badab War campaign setting, but kind of let if fizzle after I moved. The idea was to have the Deathwatch characters moving on around the edges of the war. but to eventually drug into the war. I planned on merging some of the original concepts of the Badab War, such as the Huron loyalists were researching forbidden tech in the eye. I was going to have the Betrayal at Grief actually be coordinated by the PCs by the order of they Watch Captain at an old Watchstation, that lead to the ambush and the deaths. This would lead to a split in the Deathwatch, part siding with the Traitors and part siding with the loyalist. This could also lead to some great social encounters that everyone is saying the deathwatch is missing. Being the way Space Marines are, I could easily see to groups of marines sitting down to feast together before or after a major battle. Similar to during the Klingon Civil War in Star Trek TNG.

I love your ideal, I think it's great to have that drama between the DW chapters, making them choose if they are going to side with there rebel home chapter or stay loyal to the DW.
