A hello and a question about environments

By syrilian, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello, I have been a lurker here for about a month now so I thought I would introduce myself. Im a 27 year old male and my girlfriend introduced me to the board game and I have become pretty hooked on it. Last weekend, we finally beat all the AO's in the base game. Next time we play, we'll be putting in the KiY....which has kicked our butts the few times we have played it.

Anyway, I had a question about how environments work. Do environments that provide modifiers to checks affect the Other Worlds? Ive heard conflicting things that Weather cards do? What about Mythos Cards in general? For instance, I know there are Mythos Cards that can either curse or bless the first player, but what if they are in the OW?

Environments that only affect investigators in Arkham will be specific about it not affecting investigators in OWs. Also, Weather and Urban Environments have no effect in OWs (well none that I've seen). Other Mythos cards (like All Quiet in Arkham!) affect everyone unless noted otherwise.

Sunny and Clear

Environment (Weather)

Sneak checks in Arkham are made at a -1 penalty.

Will checks in Arkham are made at a +1 bonus.

Dreams of a Sunken CIty

Environment (Mystic)

Investigators cannot gain Sanity except by receiving psychiatric care at Arkham Asylum (or from Carolyn Fern).

Thank you, I appreciate it.

Here are some exceptions:

Temperance Fever Sweeps City doesn't affect investigators in Other Worlds. The rationale is that it doesn't make thematic sense, and investigators in Other Worlds are probably never supposed to be arrested .

The Deputy of Arkham is not affected by Curfew Enforced .

One I happened upon the other day that seemed really strange was Blue Skies . It doesn't say investigators "in Arkham" are affected, but I played that it was town-only because it doesn't make sense otherwise. At least with Planetary Alignment , Yuggoth would obviously be affected; and with Solar Eclipse you could argue that the spells and the casters originated on Earth and thus are affected anywhere the spells are taken.

Thanks, Tibs. That does make sense. It seems like we have been playing it the right way. I was wondering because technically you could say that the gates you go in to the "other worlds" are just that, other worlds with their own weather and environments and therefore you could argue that the environment mythos cards dont affect the other world. I never have played that way though.

Blue Skies is an odd one anyway. It's the only card that just says "+1 Speed" instead of "+1 to Speed checks and one extra movement point," so I think it's reasonable to assume that the normal format (complete with the phrase "in Arkham") was what was intended.

Right. It used to say "+1 to speed checks and everyone gets one extra movement point," probably to be precise, but just saying "+1 speed" is more concise.

However, it is worth noting that if some effect triggers on "a speed of 2 or less," the second wording above actually adds to your speed skill (effectively reducing the chance of the effect triggering) while the first wording does not.
