Showing rune puzzle cards?

By k7e9, in Mansions of Madness

We just finished up a game of MoM and during that game we discussed if the player trying to solve a rune puzzle can have the obstacle card with the picture of the puzzle and use it as a reference?

In a way it seems appropriate that the investigators get to look at the pictures (after a few times they know what it's supposed to look like anyways) but in another way it feels wrong. The rules aren't exactly clear when saying "note that the artwork on these cards exists only as a reminder of what the completed rune puzzle looks like." Does that mean that the investigators can use it as a reminder, or that only the keeper can use it?

I supose yes, players can see the puzzle picture solved, even see the rulesbook pictures, bigger and clearer. The only limit I would put is the time limit, optional rules suggests 60 seconds, I use 2 minutes because I'm playing with novice players *^_^*

I don't see how it makes a difference?

Well, if you know what the finished picture should look like by referencing the card it might be easier than if you try to piece it together without knowing how the end result should look, kind of like trying to do a regular puzzle without knowing what it will look like in the end.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking rune puzzles, but the others. But yes, I believe they can look at the backs to know what the finished picture looks like.

@K7E9-Ithink it is up to you. Do you believe the investigators would like the challange of trying to figure out the puzzle without a picture aid or do you think they wuold get frustrated? In the end just decide what would be the most fun. (just remember, roleplaying wise, the investigators would not have a picture of the completed puzzle or lock)
