Comparative card values in deck construction

By Urutsini, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

Hi all,

First post here, so forgive me if this is in the wrong section . . . Inquest Gamer Magazine had a regular section which ranked all Magic cards from 1 to 5, which gave an indication of a card's efficiency and overall power, allowing a comparison between cards. I found it indispensable when it came to deck construction, especially when I had to make a decision between similar cards. I have only just started playing AGoT and I'm having difficulty gauging the comparative strengths of the cards. Is there any resource either on the web or on these forums with this sort of information for each card?

I've had a look on boardgamegeek and cardgamedb and there's nothing like this. Cardgamedb does have a few good articles discussing cards from recent sets but not an extensive list, and not formated so that it is easily skimmed. If nothing like this exists, is there any chance of getting together a group of people here and coming up with a list? We could possibly set up some sort of resource, maybe in conjunction with cardgamedb, that allows users to rate each card which a final panel reviews and adjusts as necessary (to avoid cards that are flavoursome and fun and inevitably ranked high but are underpowered and vice versa). Then compiles and posts a comprehensive spreadsheety thing. What do you think?

Thanks!

The problem with this is that, often, cards have different value depending on the rest of the deck.

However, if you're interested in seeing a general trend I suggest you head over to agotcards.org. Just like on cardgamedb, users can rate cards and comment on them, but agotcards.org has a much larger and/or more active user base and thus significantly more coverage with regards to the number of cards rated.

Thank you Saturnine,

That is precisely the sort of resource I was after. I understand the value of cards does change depending on synergy with other cards. The way Inquest (RIP) handled the ratings went something like:

1. Useless card

2. Card with limited use, generally cards that are fun but underpowered

3. Card can be useful depending on the deck

4. Card is useful in most decks

5. Run the card if you can

It was also good in that it took its data mostly from stores, then from general feedback then finalised by a panel. But again, thanks muchly for the linkage, very much appreciated :)

Because of the format of the game (LCG) with its fixed card distribution, the demand for card rankings is not that great, I suppose, simply because there's no thriving singles market as there is with a CCG.

That's understandable. It was just that I have played the core set extensively and just purchased the entire catalogue of expansions today online. I got a little freaked out when I realised how many cards that will be arriving over the next couple of weeks and that I have no idea how best to assess the power of each card until I play it more. At least this gives me an idea.

Now all we need is the rest of the house resin cards to be manufactured . . . #rhetoricaljab

Well look at a card like

Wars are Won with Quills

event

Text: After you win an Intrigue challenge by 4 or more total strength, choose a challenge type. The losing opponent cannot attack or defend during that challenge type.

in a Military deck like Stark Siege or Lannister Clansman this card is useless, in a Baratheon Asshai or lannister Intrigue deck this card is amazing. against a Stark Siege deck this card is a great way to stall your enemy, against a balanced Red Viper deck its just alright.

It depends on the deck your playing with, the deck your playing against and the support cards you already have in your deck.

Some cards are really great, some are really horrible but there is a lot in the middle that really depends on what you do with it

Though some do seem to be universal, for the record. Every decklist I've seen has Valar Morghulis in it...
