Campaign help

By Serimus Bodikan, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

Hi everyone, after running a couple of one-shot missions. I've been asked by my friends to run a watch campaign, now that in itself isn't the tricky part. What's been tricky is that the campaign I've set-up and ran the first mission involves a combination of both local and off-worlder orks fighting for a Forge World that's only been in service for a humble 300 years.

Now the trick has been trying to figure out if I should use hord rules for the normal orks to represent that they move in massive groups. Or should I treat them more as elites and use the horde method for gretchen and squigs? So far I've been using the later than the former and that seems to work. What do you guys think?

And for anyone wondering about the team, it consists of the following: A Dark Angel offshoot apothecary, A Black Templar tactical marine, a Angel tactical marine who's going more for the scout-sniper apperance, a Angel assault marine, a Space Wolf devistator, and I've got another friend who's playing a ex-sister of battle acolyte who turned out to show signs of being a psyker after traveling with her Inquisitor for a while. Also, if anyone has any ideas about how to move the campaign. I'd greatly appreciate it.

It depends on the general scale of the engagement, really. If it's a huge battle, Ork hordes would be fine, but if it's a smaller battle with a swarm of squigs, using them individually might work, too. It really depends on how easily they are being killed by the players.

Fluff-wise, it might make more sense, in most situations, to use Ork Boyz in hordes, but Flash Gitz, Tank Bustaz, etc. could be used as elites, as well as Nobs, obviously. The Squigs and Gretchin are more of a supporting role anyway, possibly to tie down the Kill-Team for some Shoota Boyz or what-not.

Hi, for my part i would use horde mode for most of the ork to give player an epic scale battle, and use ork as elite for specific ambush, or some point where the KT have to be silent and unseen and where individual ennemy have to be dealt case by case.

From my point of view DW is a game of heroes where player fight uneven battle and turn the tide of war. But sometime subtile approach are needed.
