New musings

By padawanninja, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Finally got thru my 4th game (first 2 were solo) and got eaten by Yig. Fun times all around were had!! :-) Which brings me to a couple of questions / observations:

1) Do you only close gates when you can seal them? Or do you use that as a chance to keep the doom track from advancing any further, and just dealing with the monster surges??? I know this is not a rule question per se, but an interesting tactical question....

2) Had a situation where I was stuck in a street area and the mythos card closed the street, text was something along the lines of "no one can enter or leave ____ streets area for a turn". If I am in a store and it closes, I get booted to the street. In this situation, I figured it was like a police blockade and simply lost my turn. Was this correct???

3) Had the Mythos card where the lab experiment happened at Miskatonic and stack the baddies on it. Now, the question I have is this: When a gate closes, does it suck those baddies away? Which leads to the last question:

4) When a gate closes, it sucks away the baddies with the same shape. What happens if there are two gates open to the other dimension? We played it where all the open gates had to be shut before the baddies went away.

Fun game, now I just need to get a couple of expansions. And please, I have seen the threads, so I am not looking to expound upon that anymore than has already been done, just a quick comment... :-)

Getting eaten by Yig is mighty fun indeed.

1) No, you can totally close a gate without being able to seal. This is one of the victory conditions: the last open gate is closed and you collectively have N gate trophies (N is the number of investigators). Sometimes, particularly in higher-number-investigator games, it is beneficial to close gates so that you don't get stung by the open gate limit. Sometimes you need trophies to pass a rumor or something.

2) Fourth of July Parade says you can't leave the street, so you can't leave the street. If someone was in an adjoining location that closed during the parade, they would get booted through the Rivertown streets into the next space of their choice. This is very rare however.

3) No, those monsters are not on the board. The gate does not affect them.

4) No, the first gate will do the trick. Maybe some more square monsters will show up by the time you close the other gate to Another Dimension.

It depends on the playing style, the AO, the situation, etc., etc. I like the idea of sealing gates instead of just closing them but it seems you sometimes need to close them to (i) ensure the AO doesn't awaken (ii) stop monster surges (iii) remove annoying / difficult monsters from the board / outskirts (iv) lots of other reasons happy.gif

Sorry, do you know the Mythos card name?

The Terrible Experiment Mythos card ? If so, it states "These monsters do not move, are not considered on the board, and do not count against the monster limit." so I take that to mean they are not effected by gate closures.

No, the monsters would be removed when the first gate is closed.

Really! This doesn't seem to make sense theme wise. I would assume if you were in River Docks / The Unnameable / Unvisited Isle and that location was closed, then you would be booted into the Merchant District street area and then be stuck there. Were does your logic / rules come from to place an investigator into an adjacent street area?

This was verified to me personally a while ago.

*sigh* now that you've got me thinking, we've seen rulings change on things. So once the FAQ is finished this may not be the case anymore (or may not be addressed).

Generally I only close gates that I can seal, however there are several instances that I don't. The one's I can remember just at the moment are:

The # open gates is very close to awakening You Know Who

I need a gate trophy (whether to spend or because the AO requires characters to have at least one)

    To get rid of monsters

when you have a few seals on the board already and decide to attempt to close every remaining gates.

To pass a personal story (only an issue for Innsmouth expansion)

I'm sure there are plenty of other occasions, but I would still say that sealing should be your aim.

I think we'll see Bigfoot swimming with the Loch Ness monster before the FAQ is published.

We're still collecting FAQs and errata for the Loch Ness Horror expansion.

Does the Loch Ness monster token count as a Deep One for the purposes of Innsmouth Look devourings?

I can't say at this time. NDA.

I was simply looking at the number of open gates as a function of how many there are, and keeping the doom track from advancing... In a 4 player game, you figure there are 11 spaces a gate can open, and since you can have 6 gates open before the AO wakes up (something about a mental image of Cthulu kicking in his sleep like my dog kinda takes the sting out of how evil he is... :-) ) that makes it a 50/50 that the doom track won't advance... When you take a quick AO like Yig, that can be beneficial, and even buy some time on the longer games as well... I will grant that in a bigger game you want to keep the number down, but not necessarily 0 as the odds tilt a little in the players favor if there are a couple of gates open, and assuming that you can handle the monster surges that happen... But, as with all tactics, there is no silver bullet / golden rule, and it doesn't always apply... Even Patton knew when to throw the book away...

I don't recall the exact working on the card, but I do remember being in Northside when the card was played... Had been an aggravating game so far as I had run into Unvisited Isle to get a clue and had a gate open on me; got thru it and close it (but couldn't seal it), only to have another gate open on me and delay me again... Then when I finally got thru the second time and sealed it this time (couple of lucky draws in the other worlds), I made it into Northside streets to be stuck because no one was allowed either in or out... :-( So I was sidelined for about half the game...

@xrid: Yes, it was the Terrible Experiment card (sorry, don't have them memorized yet... Have to trade time between this and Talisman for space in the brain - heck with school....) that was in play... However, I saw that the rules state that when a gate is closed, any monster in Arkham is removed, and as Miskatonic is definitely in Arkham, well I put 2 and 2 together and apparently got 5. I reasoned that they are listed as not on the board for purposes of movement and counting against the monster limit, but were otherwise tied to the gates. As a side note, it also didn't help that out of the initial 4 monsters, 2 were cultists... :-( Oh well...

@Kraw: So, we are fighting You Know Who now??? Isn't that from a different genre / author!??!?! Now HE would be an interesting AO, tho not very ancient, maybe just a herald??

Actually... I'm surprised no one has posted a Voldemort herald or Ancient One yet, but then again, maybe that's because Lovecraft is slightly darker than Harry Potter.

Harry Potter:

"Oh no! He killed like, ten guys! Voldemort is the worst villain in the history of mankind!"

Lovecraft:

"Oh no! It's coming to destroy the galaxy!" Blink. "The galaxy!"
"The galaxy, and life itself are utterly insignificant space dust. Proceed to madness, human."

ooooo... <giggle> Idea... A Reaper from Mass Effect as the AO... Old, check... Wants to wipe out all life (of a certain level) in the galaxy, check.... Huge??? Check... But who would be the herald?? Hmmm... Might have to work on this one... :-)

Just make sure it's a good pic, or not. I have no idea what you're talking about, but it sounds fun.

Yeeeees, you must play with Monterey, Mary, Vincent, and Dexter against the horror of horrors, Harry Potter himself!

I'd like to clarify that this was no reference to to Voldemort (assuming thats how you spell it?).

I've never read any of the books and had the displeasure of seeing 2 of the films. I mean I'm sure the books are good, but I have far too many other books to read first.

Such as the Ian M Banks novel I havent picked up in weeks...

Mass Effect is a video game (Xbox 360, PC) where you are trying to stop a race of machines (the Reapers) from wiping out all life, above a certain technological level, in the galaxy... A little time on YouTube will bring up a lot of videos on this, but here is a good dialog from the first game:

A very well done series of games... The best, IMHO... :-)

Heh... Cool scene... In the distant future when I buy a used xbox 360 I'll definitely have to pick up this game ;'D Except... I'm sure the Reapers don't win ::eyeroll::
