2011 Arkham Nights

By Hellfury, in CoC General Discussion

I have no idea why this hasnt been announced on the FFG site yet, but the 2001 Arkham Nights will be held on October 14th-16 at the FFG Event Center. According to the flier I have in my hands that I picked up from the FFG EC yesterday.

It was great event last year. Katja and I have attended their other events but this is the one she is actually excited for. As in, she immediately made plans for the days off to attend instead of half heartedly agreeing to attend.

It was a great friendly atmosphere that was a lot of fun and likely be will moreso this year.

I look forward to seeing people who attended last year (Kat, Jason & Joshua) as well as hoping to see some new faces.

Oh man... I wish there was a way for me to swing attending this and Days of Ice and Fire...

Hello,

This sounds interesting, what exactly is it though? Sorry I'm new around here. :)

It is an annual event at Fantasy Flight Games's Event Center in Roseville, MN where they have a weekend of gaming and tournaments for all of the Call of Cthulhu properties.

Cool that sounds fun. What kind of crowd is it usually? Mostly young? Older? A good mix?

It's a pretty good mix actually. I would say average age is about between 25-35 maybe? Mostly older than younger as I saw very few teens present. Even the guy-to-girl ration is about even, which is odd for most game conventions.

My wife and I plan going again this year. We had a great time last year. Thought about trying to do Days of Ice and Fire instead, but the odds of getting caught in a blizzard are dramatically higher once you get into November.

Yup, Days of Ice and Fire last year wound up being "Days of Frozen Wasteland and almost impossible to get around in a car."

Since we're driving up from Indiana, any potential for heavy snowfall pretty much kills our trip plans. Especially given that we actually like driving around Minneapolis, going downtown, and to Mall of America, etc.

Honest question here for folks who have been to this event:

I'm thinking about flying in from PA to attend, and I'd most likely be traveling alone. Is it worth the trip? I'm mainly interested in playing Cthulhu LCG, as I only have one person to play with here.

Thanks

Whereabouts in PA? We have a group near Philly, and there is a group near Pittsburgh...

Scranton actually, about 1.5-2 hours north of Philly. Not very far!

You might want to consider joining us some Saturday then? We usually play on Saturdays, but if we know that you would be joining we would make sure that we were playing! And we are a little bit north of the city, so some reduced time driving (near Willow Grove exit of PA Turnpike).

Why can't we get these in the UK and Europe too? Not everyone can get to the States.

Arkham Nights happens at Fantasy Flight's Headquarters, which is why they are not happening anywhere in the world except Minnesota.

As for Regional Championships, those do happen in Europe.

I might take you up on that offer! Is there anyway to send a private message on these boards to pass on some more info? Sounds fun. :)

A user here by the name of "AUCODEMONKEY" came up with his fiance from Alabama and they both seemed to enjoy themselves.

Here is the thread for feedback from last years event if that helps you at all.

We still need more events in the UK. I certainly can't get to Castle Sthalek but I could get somewhere within the UK no problem.

I'm pretty sure if you get your local game store to interact directly with Fantasy Flight they can work something out.

I used to be the organiser for my FLGS. We could never get enough interest locally. We only ever had a handful of people (5 at best) and that's dissapearing fast.

So it comes to the question: Should FFG subsidize events in your area to possibly increase sales, or should they reward areas that have demonstrated sales? It's a tough one with different opinions on both sides. FFG has been putting the cost of events on the shoulders of the players, especially for boutique games like CoC. They don't have enough global sales to cover the cost of fancy organized play, and I suspect that their market projections don't indicate it would help sales. Because otherwise they would be doing it already - they are not an ignorant company, they clearly do their market research and respond accordingly.

So I guess it is back to the idea that if you want to have a Regional Event in your area, you get your LGS to put up the money for prize support and promotion and make the proposal to FFG that they can pull it off.

Yes Patrick, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves last year! Unfortunately, Jennifer and I won't be able to make it this year llorando.gif It's a shame too! She's got nasty mono Cthulhu (big surprise!) and Shub/Hastur decks, and I was really hoping to play my TitG deck (though so many things wreck that deck now...) or my Syndicate/Silver Twilight removal deck. As long as there's a relatively good turnout this year, hopefully FFG will see fit to do another one next year, and we'll definitely be there for that one!
