Dragon Deck - Beat the Bloat

By LoneWanderer, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

So, does anybody have a decent Dragon decklist?

Ideally I'm looking to sling one around in a melee for the novelty value this weekend. I suspect that the whole concept is not a born winner, but would like to see it running semi-effectively for kicks.

My problem is that my fledgling decklist is rapidly spiralling into the 70+ card territory. So my question is: What do you absolutely have to have in that deck?

Obviously I've got the core apparatus of multiple copies of: Daenerys + Big Dragons + Hatchlings + Each of the dragon boosting locations. But it's the extras that are killing me. There's nine separate events that I'm looking at including, multiple weenie characters that beg for slots (to block intrigue challenges, kill attachments, draw cards, etc), locations like Flaming Pitch Tower that seem too good to drop (and are synergistic with mashing big ugly mil/pow challenges into opponents' collective faces), various bits of spot-removal and board control technology, and a wide range of resource-generating locations that I can't make my mind up on. However, I realise that every card added after the fundamental core ultimately makes the deck less likely to draw into dragon-related shennanigans.

So there it is, open to the room: sample decklists greatly appreciated, commentary on effective dragon-support cards sought, and any other generally helpful advice gladly received.

I think the basic deck list is a pretty good. The thing about the Dragons is you really want to get all 3 out asap, and then hope there's no reset. Dragon Lore is a fantastic attachment, and Linked Advisor, Oldtown Scholar, and Advisor to the Crown are excellent choices to put the attachment on. If you have him, Balerion can be reduced to 0 with Dragon Lore, so put him in if you got him. He's awesome on his own - renown will speed up the power grab and deadly will help with the challenge control. But adding him to the other three will net you an extra power with Rheagal, let you kill a strength 4 character with Drogon, and discard a cost 3 location with Viscerion. So basically he's awesome. 3x Dance with Dragons will effectively give you 3 more dragons, letting you search for dupes and what not when you get it.

I ended up dropping Field of Fire, and most of the dragon support locations. I kept Meereen and the one that gives renown (I think it's Yunkai). I also dropped almost every non-weenie character to add the maesters. Body guards are great for protecting Daenerys.

Hope that helps! Dragons in melee are pretty ridiculous once you get all 3 (or 4) out with some dups. With the heir agenda a turn 3 or sooner win is completely doable. The key is to get cards into hand and dragons duped on the table.

If you're looking at a power rush, its like this...

I really don't see why a dragon deck wouldnt run Heir to the Iron Throne, so take a good look at that.

Definite 3s are Dany, Rhaegal and Yunkai. all from QotD. The other dragons are nice to have, but really the hatchlings are just as good for power grabbing (that isnt to say you wouldnt play a few of each anyway).

The dragon decks i've seen play influence to ambush the dragons, I cannot say how good/bad this is... but its a nice surprise factor.

Ambush from the plains is nice for getting Dany out 'early' (Dragons come first), maybe on a retaliation turn or something.

Defensively... you are open. Intrigue, play off you're draw really... Power, even if everyone Picks on you, and you let it all through, you can easily make back that 3-4 power when you're turn comes around (Yunkai+Rhaegal+2xPower Challenges). Military is the one thing you have a big problem with, make space for warm bodies to kill off for claim (Queen's Harbinger, Refugee's, viserys etc)

I've seen 13 power on turn 1 with this sort of build.

I've been playing a Dragon deck for some time. As everyone I stared with Heir To the Iron Throne, lots of Dragons and Daenerys of cors. But then I realized that ill all looks pretty "on paper" but until you have the chance to draw and play all the dragons and Dany with them, some off them were already dead, you lack a decend draw (meereen alone isn't just enough and easy to control for your opponent) and I offten didn't have enough resources to play all those expensive characters.

So the idea I came up with was this: I switched Heir for Kings Of Summer - extra gold with Black Raven and what's more important - additional card to get my dragons even faster. I also dropped Dany. My sound crazy at first, but she is expensive, died really quickly and then blocked my hand. Astapor is just awsome to keep your dragons standing, At Night They Howl is pretty useful too.

So for now I play summer Dragons - with Dragons only, I have a lot of draw mechanic (meereen, Gilly, Jhogo, Drogo), a lot of gold to pay for those expensive characters and it works just fine.

I run a dragon/maester deck using the maester agenda, so my experience is not 100% transferable.

However, I have found that Mereen and Quarth are necessary. Yunkai and Astapor I view as extras.

I think that running Dragon Lore is SUPER HUGE. It feels like it makes my deck flow better and helps me clear out my hand. I would probably include a couple Advisors to the Queen. The influence is great, as having the dragons ambush in is very nice. Advisor there right at the getgo makes 4 influence cost seem pretty reasonable.

Dragon fear is very nice, as is Maegi's promise. You are so dependant on a few uniques that deaths REALLY hurt.

Playing Balerion with Dragon Lore is a BEAST. I would say I can put Balerion down turn 1 if I want in 50% or more of my games. And having 4 dragons out is a BIG deal. And probably my fav plot to run when I know Balerion is coming is Retaliation!. You want you opponent to go first. And Retaliation makes that a STRONG possibility. You want the 2 claim:) I had Dany out and Quarth for a turn 2 or 3 balerion recently. Literally won all 3 challenges at 2 claim unopposed - put my opponent WAY behind...

Remember, when you wanna play Balerion, play him first in the round. No point kneeling stuff you don't have to

At the gates helps get the advosor out early or whenever you need it for dragon lore.

My best suggestions is for you to wait until the 21st. I have one ready to show you guys. ;)

Without having ANY experience to speak of, I always thought the following would be cool:

- 3 X Maegi's Promise to get Dany and/or your dragons out of the dead pile

- 3 X Dance w/Dragons

- 3 X Dragon Strikes (could probably use these instead of some of the Dragon support locations. Sure they are more limited in application and duration, but they free up other resource locations, keep you safe from location hate, and your opponent can't plan for it - like a face-up location)

Best thing about these cards - no worries about "paper shield" raining on your parade!
