Story resolution and actions following terror icon checks.

By DeFrank, in CoC Rules Discussion

I know that you may not play any actions during the resolution of the four story phases, but it there a window of action after the four icons are resolved but before the story checks for story progress.

i.e.

Player 2 drives Player 1 insane during the terror phase

After the 3 remaining icons are resolved, Player 1 uses Arkham Asylum to refresh and ready the player before determining story progression. Player 1 succeeds and adds tokens to the success track of that story.

The reason I ask is because on the timing chart in the manual the point in which you determine story success in strangely absent altogether.

It just says:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Resolve Terror Struggle
  • Resolve Combat Struggle
  • Resolve Arcane Struggle
  • Resolve Investigation Struggle

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Response to struggle and success results may be played.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Actions may be taken

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Characters are uncommited from stories

That diagram should be updated to be more explicit, but the answer is in the FAQ:

(v1.0) Resolving Stories
Resolving struggles and determining success at all three story cards happens all within the same “gray box” on the timing flowchart. Thus, no actions or responses can be triggered between one story’s resolution and the beginning of the next story’s resolution. The only responses players can choose to trigger are Disrupts, however Forced Responses that apply to the situation must trigger automatically.

Thank you for the quick reply. happy.gif

So just so I am clear. There is no place to play actions between the 4 story icons and the beginning of story progression?

When story resolution begins no more actions. You do the 4 struggles, determine success, and if a story is won you execute (or not) the story effect. Then you do the next story, etc.

When all stories that have active player characters committed have been resolved, then there is a possibility of taking actions.

Thank you guys, makes sense to me. happy.gif

I hope my wife and I haven't been playing this wrong so far then!

Let's say that we both commit a character each to a story. I have a character that has a terror symbol and my wife has a character that doesn't have any. The first struggle to be resolved is terror. So, does my wife's character:

1) go immediately insane and therefore be unable to take part in the remaining icon struggles?

2) go insane after all of the icon struggles have been performed?

We've gone with option 1 so far.

I know printed responses to icon struggles are performed after all icon struggles are resolved but I didn't think that the effects of icon struggles were exactly the same as responses. Getting confused now.

Please advise.

Now I'm confused: Where in this thread has someone been saying that the effects of icon struggles are exactly the same as responses?
