Claim Zero plots...

By Maester_LUke, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I had an interesting discussion with one of the "newer" members of our meta. And by that, I mean a really good gamer who doesn't play Thrones much. He commented on the popularity of Valar and his surprise that we don't have more 0 claim plots with bomb abilities or stats. It caused me no end of consternation to find that agotcards doesn't allow you to sort plots by stats, Rogue30's site doesn't include CCG cards, and cardgamedb does neither. At least when I'm trying to write up a well-supported post.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple, but other options included The King's Peace , Defenders of the Realm , and Wildling Assault . Strangely, in addition to being 0 claim, the first one was banned, and the other two have the Kingdom trait (generally limiting them to two per deck, with some exception). What kind of effect would people want to make a card w/ 0 claim playable. The Red Viper certainly doesn't mind claim 0 if he's gonna get 3 renown and a couple power for unopposed, possibly. And you can still attack to trigger responses. Valar is symmetrical. Would something asymmetrical be viable on a card like that?

Speaking of Kingdom plots, I think they would make a nice return to the game, ven with modified stats. A lot of people avoid search plots unless a character/location/attachment is necessary for their deck, and still have qualms. Would it be unbalancing to have unilateral searchs back if they had lower stats/greater restrictions? I don't think we need On Raven's Wings back, but the rest wouldn't be too bad, and might add a constructive complement to the City plots more disruptive effects.

I think a claim zero plot needs to have a pretty amazing special ability to be worth using. Even Valar I usually hesitate, as you're pretty much guaranteed to lose initiative, and they can then come straight back at you for a free round before you can threaten them again. Wildfire works much better- trims their character pool without giving them the long period to recuperate.

Obviously, for Stark, something like Winter is Coming + Valar is quite good to catch people off guard, but even that's only 1 per round.

It depends. With The Siege of Winterfell interesting plot with 0 claim value might be too good.

Especially in melee, in certain cases the lower the claim the better.

with 0 claim, players are likely to let you have the unopposed and not have to spend resources defending. Nice for "catching up" if you are not in winning range.

Claim zero + Direct Assault + Price of War + Die By The Sword + Seductive Promise + Condemned by the Council + Halfhand + Robb Stark (Core) + Smelly Melly (DotN) + Theon Greyjoy + ... + ... + ...

Personally I would like a few more zero claims, I think if it had an interesting enough ability I would use it for sure as a casual player
