So I'm looking into this, however I'm not quite sure on what "needs" to be bought. I understand that core set 2x is needed, however does this give the right amount of cards, or is a third set needed to cover cards that there are only one quantity of? Also, I saw in another thread that 2x Princes of the Sun is recommended, why?
Getting into the game, what to buy
a 3rd core set can be useful but isn't necessary until you get into some heavy deckbuilding. If you want 60 card decks for all 6 houses you'll need 2x core set and 1x each of the reprinted versions of Kings of the Sea and Princes of the Sun (to be released august or september). The old releases of KotS and PotS didn't come with full playsets of the cards, now they do so it is much easier to build decks with them.
Just get 2x Core set plus the deluxe expansion for which house you are wanting to play ...maybe buy a couple of chapter packs which are $10 each for a good amount of cards.

That explains that, I didn't realize that PotS didn't have a revised version. Should the boxes for Martell and Greyjoy be my first uys after the core or can I afford to buy chapter packs instead(most likely brotherhood without banners)?

If you don't mind your chapter packs having some less useful cards (the greyjoy and martell ones) then it is fine getting chapter packs first.
all these threads need to ask two questions.
1) What is your goal - fun, family, competitive, etc
2) How much do you want to spend?
