Dothraki/Army Deck with Dragon Pit

By rwjohnson, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

I want to build a Dothraki deck with some burn tech in it (primarily forever burning and flame kissed, and probably 1x The Hatchlings Feast). I want to add The Dragon Pit to it to make the burn stronger, as well as to make Thundering Calvary stronger when the enter play. But I'm having trouble deciding which shadows cards to include in the deck, how many shadows cards should be included, and how many copies of dragon pit should be included.

My first thought is 3x the Dragon Pit, 2-3x Dragon Skull, and perhaps 3x Shadow of the East to sit in shadows in case someone plays a nasty attachment on one of my characters, or to discard a Venomous Blade if they come out of shadows first.

I also plan on using the Knights of the Hollow Hill agenda to smooth out the gold and influence curve, LDC to recycle attachments, and probably Xaro's home for some draw. So that makes me lean towards the Dragon Pit.

Has anyone built a deck like this? How did it play? Any suggestions are very welcome!

You'll probably want 3x Dragonpit if its going to be a staple of the deck, and I would suggest 12-15 Shadows cards to fuel it. It sounds like you want a light Shadows deck... are you planning on using Red Keep or King's Landing? They will take up some of your location space, but KL is a reliable draw mechanic. Also, don't try to mix too many mechanics, I would advise against trying Dothraki and Shadows and Summer (for Shadow of the East recursion).

Assuming you do use Shadow of the East, I'd do something like

3x Dragon Skull
1-2x Syrio
3x Warlock of Quarth (after using them a bit I really like these guys)
1x Varys
1x each Hatchling
2x Shadow of the East

or

2-3x King's Landing
1x Syrio
1x Varys
3x Dragonskull
2x Red Keep
2x Warlock of Quarth
1x each Hatchling

If you plan on using Threat From the North and Thundering Calvary you may want to use Silent Sisters or Shadow Cats instead of the two 1-STR Hatchlings.

I believe Dothraki / Burn is more efficient with the Summer agenda. Killer of the Wounded / Fairweather Followers / Forever Burning synergize extremely well for instance. The Followers are not Dothraki, but their standing technique emulates that of the Dothraki (Deadly Khalasar etc.) and they share the same crest with many Dothraki.

I agree that KotHH is probably not the best idea for what you are thinking. The summer agenda would lend yourself to a much smoother draw engine and gold production. Not only will you be drawing 3 cards per turn but you can use Sam Tarly, Black Ravens, and Carrion Birds to draw even more cards. Also running summer agenda means that you get to include Gilly. As a free character with 3 STR INT and POW icons and draws you a card when she wins a challenge she is money! Just my .02. :)

For the Dragonpit you want at least 9 shadows cards in the deck. Here are the few that I would include...

Syrio x 1 (Stealth and Mil icon, goes back into shadows when he wins a challenge...yes please!)

Varys(KL) x 1 (Don't need burn when you can just outright discard an Ally character)

King's Landing Assassin x 2 or 3 (Burn....so good!)

Dragon Skull x 2 or 3 (More Burn...)

King's Landing x 2 (Card Draw is essential to every deck)

Shadow of the East x 1 (recursive attachment hate should not be underestimated)

The Red Keep x 1 ("Just in case" influence)

Warlock of Qarth x 2 (Never underestimate the power of a Deadly character with INT and POW icons, plus location hate is always good)

If you do the min number of each that would put you at 12 shadows cards to work with. Should be plenty enough shadows cards to turn on the burn with DragonPit.

Hope this helps!

Those are some helpful suggestions. I do like the idea of Varys, King's Landing, and The Red Keep for sure. Especially if I switched to a summer deck over Hollow Hill. I'm not sold on King's Landing Assassin, they seem pretty expensive for what they do. But I will try out the Warlocks, they seem like they could add some much needed intrigue to the deck.
