A few rules clarifications

By Captain Bulldozer, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Greetings! I'm still a fairly new player and have a few questions.

1) With regard to the card "Lethal Counterattack" : CHALLENGES: During a (Military) challenge, kneel 2 of your (Stark) characters to kill all attacking characters. Limit one per challenge.

The question is exactly how this affects the challenge itself. Its clear from the FAQ that the timing of this effect is that the characters will be killed before defenders are chosen. So, if ALL attacking characters are killed (none saved) must defenders still be declared, or is the challenge considered mute at this point? Are the killed characters still considered, in any way, to be or to have been participating in the challenge? If one or more charcters are saved, does the challenge still go forth as normal with only the saved characters involved?

2) Regarding the card "Dragon Bite" :(attachment) Condition. Attached character is killed any time it is participating in a challenge in which a Dragon character is participating.

When exactly would the attached character be killed? Would it be as soon as they become a participating character, at the end of the challenge, etc. Does the attached character add their strength to the challenge?

3) I have seen in several places the mention of a Mulligan, but the core rules make no mention of this? What are the exact rules regarding the taking of Mulligans, and where are these rules documents?

I'm sure there will be more questions at some point, but that's all for now. Thanks for any assistance you can give!

1) The FAQ tells us (3.33, p. 10) that if at any point during a challenge after attackers are declared there are no participating characters, that challenge ends immediately without resolution.

If a character has been removed from a challenge, it is no longer considered to be a participating character. Pretty straightforward :)

If attacking characters are saved from being killed, they would, of course, be still participating, and the challenge goes its usual course.

2) As soon as they become a participating character. So usually during the framework action window in which defenders are declared, or if he was put into play through a player action, then during the player action window. (For an explanation of those terms and the timing structure, see the FAQ). Long story short, they'll be dead before the challenge resolution and therefore won't count their strength.

3) The Mulligan allows you, after drawing your first hand for setup, to shuffle your hand back into your deck and draw a new setup hand. The corresponding rule can be found in the Tournament Rules.

There is another option, though. You could declare a defender, then play Lethal Counterattack. If all the attacking characters die, there would still be a participating character - your defender. The challenge would continue to resolution - and the defender would almost certainly win the challenge since that's the only side with participating characters. If that happens, the defender can do things like collect power for Renown and trigger Responses for "winning a challenge" and "winning a challenge as the defender."

To be exact, the character will die as soon as a Dragon participates in the same challenge as it.

Since all the Dragons currently have the "No attachments" keyword, you will either have to give a participating character the Dragon trait or have another character that has the Dragon trait participate in the same challenge as the character with Dragon Bite attached.

Hey, the search engine for the boards worked! We had a situation tonight where a Red Viper with a dupe on it was attacking when I played Lethal Counterattack. The dupe was discarded to save the Viper and the attack continued. Glad we got the call right =)
