Gates with creatures

By RatafakECW, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi

I have one question. When I move into location with open gate and with creature into it. I must interact with that creature ( I mean, fighting or sneak ) and THEN im going to outer world ?

OR

I am going to outer world immediately - that means WITHOUT any interaction with that creature?

sorry for my english ...thanks

You deal with the monster first, during the Movement phase. Then you get sucked through the gate during the Arkham Encounters phase. Also, on a semi-related note, if you emerge from a gate with a monster on it, you don't have to deal with the monster that turn.

But, also I am "sucked" through gate If I have sneak failed (for example), or If that creature have Trap? OR I've take damage and go through gate (after for ex. sneak failed ) ? OR I must defeat that creature first and then I can go to outer world... ?

Ehm.. what do you intend with "the creature has Trap"?

Anyway, you have to follow strictly the game Phases.

As Walk said, in Phase II you deal with the monsters. So you reach the location with the monster(s) and the gate and you have immediately to face the monster. You can Evade it (them), or Fight. In case you fight, you have to follow the normal combat rules, and the combat ends by a) killing the monster b) fleeing from it after one or more rounds of combat or c) being knocked unconscious or driven insane by the creature. At this moment, the presence of the gate on your spot is completely insignificant.

If you survive the fight / evade successfully the creature(s), then, during Phase III - Arkham Encounters - you enter the gate.

Thanks Julia, You explain it great :)

I have czech rules so... ;)

ok and then I take Gate card like normal? I mean in outer world

I wonder if trap is the english equivalent of ambush?

Yes, then you take a Gate card.

Just as Julia said, just follow the phases.

Phase II is movement - you deal with monsters that are already on the board during the movement phase, including monsters guarding a gate.

Phase III is Arkham encounters - if you are on a space with a gate, then your encounter is to go through the gate.

Phase IV is Other World encounters - if you are in an Other World location, you draw a gate card during phase IV, even if you just arrived at the Other World during the preceding phase III.

Allright...great. I understand everything ..really thank you all

Yes it is an equivalent of ambush =D

Your question has been correctly addressed by the other posters but since I posted to a similar question over at BGG, here is a copy of the reply I gave (which covers a "standard" OW trip).

The combat occurs during Phase 2: Movement . During Phase 3: Arkham Encounters , you are drawn through the gate. During Phase 4: Other World Encounters , you have an encounter (while you are in the first area of the OW). All this happens on the same turn.

Page 9 of the rulebook
Phase III: Arkham Encounters: Gate
If the location has a gate, the investigator is drawn through the gate. He moves to the first area (the left area) of the Other World indicated on the gate marker.

Phase IV: Other World Encounters
During the Other World Encounters Phase, investigators in Other World spaces have encounters there.
Second Turn

You move from the first area of the Other World to the second area during Phase 2: Movement . Since you are not in Arkham Phase 3: Arkham Encounters does not apply. During Phase 4: Other World Encounters, you have a second encounter (while you are in the second area of the OW).

Page 8 and 9 of the rulebook
Phase II: Movement: Other World Movement
If the investigator is in the first area of the Other World, he moves to the second area.

Phase IV: Other World Encounters
During the Other World Encounters Phase, investigators in Other World spaces have encounters there.
Third Turn

You move from the second area of the Other World back to Arkham. During Phase 3: Arkham Encounters you may try and close the gate.

Page 8 and 9 of the rulebook
Phase II: Movement: Other World Movement
If the investigator is in the second area of the Other World, he returns to Arkham. The player must choose a location that contains a gate to the Other World he is leaving. After choosing such a location, he places his investigator marker there. Then he places an "explored" marker underneath his investigator to show that he has explored the gate. This marker remains in play as long as the investigator remains at the location. If there is no open gate leading to the Other World the investigator is in, the investigator is lost in time and space (see page 17).

Phase III: Arkham Encounters: Gate
Exception: Once an investigator has entered a gate and returned to Arkham, the player places an explored marker underneath his investigator marker. While he remains in the gate’s location, he is no longer drawn through the gate, but may instead try to close or seal the gate (see "Closing and Sealing Gates," pages 16-17). If the investigator leaves the location before the gate is closed or sealed, discard the explored marker. If the investigator returns to the location later in the game, he will again be drawn through the gate. He must resolve the Other World Encounters Phase again before he can return to the location and attempt to close or seal the gate.

And don't forget this from page 18.

Monsters Guarding Gate
During the turn he returns to Arkham from an Other World, an investigator does not have to evade or fight any monsters in the gate’s location. This rule only applies during the turn he returns to Arkham; in subsequent turns, if the investigator remains in the location, he must evade or fight any monsters there as normal.

Wait, what? Are there Leng Spiders in your cereal? I suggest keeping your cereal in a airtight container so they won't attract insects and Leng Spiders (to eat them). Or don't buy cereal made out of insects.
