Ambush and Reducers

By DerBarchen, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

So the wording for ambush in the rulebook is that the player may play the card any phase by paying its gold cost in influence. Reducers like Great Pyramid state that they reduce the cost of the played character. No where does it say that reducers reduce Gold cost, does this mean that Great Pyramid can get my dagrons out for 2 gold apiece?

You have to be careful with wordings here. Reducers reduce the cost to play cards. "Playing" a card is defined as paying its gold cost to put it into play from your hand. Ambush puts a card into play from your hand but does not "play" that card. So you can not use reducers to reduce the amount of influence that you must pay for Ambush (by the way, is this what you meant to ask? Your last sentence talks about getting your dragons out for 2 gold apiece which you can of course do but only if you are playing the dragons from your hand during your turn of the marshalling phase).

only

You cannot use The Great Pyramid in conjunction with the Ambush keyword to get a dragon into play for 2 influence in any phase, though. Not only, as schrecklich has explained, does The Great Pyramid only work with the "play" mechanic (and Ambush is very specifically a "put into play" mechanic - something that the rules define as completely separate and different from "play"), but it can only be used itself in the Marshaling phase. So by definition, it isn't going to combine with the "Any Phase" effect of Ambush in 6 out of 7 of the games phases.

That would add some interesting strategy and benefits to using ambush however.

Then again, it would make the True-Queen's Harbinger less useful if it wasn't unique to reducing the cost to Ambush.
