Pronunciation question

By Zapranoth, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Do you say it the English way ("DAWN-itch") or do you say the "w?"

Zee German vay, Dunvich :P

No, actually, I say Dun-wich. Wich as in witch. When I saw the thread's name I was willing to bet it would be about the pronunciation of "Cthulhu" :P

How do you call the inhabitants of Dunwich? Dunwichians? Dunwichers?

There is a English town that goes by the name of Dunwich , that is pronounced Dun-itch . Apparently H.P. Lovecraft never gave a preference on how it should be pronounced.

Perhaps we could infer how it is pronounced by looking at the nearby (and totally non-fictional) town of Ipswitch Massachusetts? How do the natives pronounce the name of that town anyone know?

Again, basing it on how Ipswich is pronounced in England, then that would not help.

Both Ipswich and Dunwich are real life locations in Suffolk, England, about 30 miles away from each other. Ipswich is pronounced "ips-witch" and Dunwich is pronounced "dun-itch". If the inhabitants of Suffolk pronounce "wich" part of the name different, then I'm sure the inhabitants of Massachusetts could as well.

I'm not 100% sure how Ipswich is pronounced in the U.S. but I am sure it is not pronounced "ips-itch". If anything such town names would be based on the pronunciation as used in England (given that the settlers of that area of Massachusetts mostly originated from England).

Dunwich, Massachusetts is a fictional town so there are no "natives" to correct us whatever way we decide to pronounce it happy.gif
