Tyranid audio files?

By socratim, in Deathwatch Gamemasters

Anyone know any cool insect-sounds or similar to use in campaigns with Tyranids? Specifically I am searching for a sound to represent a horde of Tyranids approaching on concrete surface (Spaceport-battle in Oblivion's Edge), that great clicking sound we came to know from Starship Troopers or other movies.

Best I could find is:

but it's a bit high-pitched and quiet.

Yes. I found that sounds for dinosaurs where very useful. There are d/l sites free of royalty
with that kind of material if you just look around.

Interesting. Never thought of that. Will have a look.

Now, come to think of it, I remember the dogs in Resident Evil 1 having a strange clicking sound when walking on concrete. Will look for those, also.

I guess spiders in differnet PC- or videogames have that clicking-effect I am searching, but searching for those only gets me real spiders, whose walking does not sound anything... :-(

One thing to remember is that Tyranids aren't insects, and have a number of traits that would make matters like their sounds far from 'bug-like'. Amongst these is the fact that most Tyranids have hooves for feet (no, really - look at the models). The average Termagant is about 2.5m long from snout to tail, weighing about 200kg (all bone, chitin and muscle - most Tyranids don't inherently need fat reserves as they're not required to last for particularly long, though some generations may possess a layer of fat for prolonged hibernation or hunting in cold environments), with hooves on its hind legs and a pair of hooked claws on its mid-legs. The sound they make when running is far more likely to be similar to that of a shetland pony galloping rather than an insect-like clicking...

I would try sounds like the bats from batman (although i dont think bats actually sound like that.)

Hm. Guess you are right. I was thinking about insects because in Oblivion's Edge it specifically states "The clicking and chittering of a thousand insectoid limbs begins to drown out all other sound".

Well, we played that scene yesterday and it worked without sound... :-)

It's a common enough mistake (I've seen people make it plenty of times for all sorts of different reasons), but the only obvious insectoid traits the most common species of Tyranid have are being six-limbed and having an exoskeleton.Tyranid organisms exist in all shapes and sizes and contain useful traits from trillions of different species (the hooves are meant, apparently, to signify the addition of mammalian traits to their colossal genetic catalogue), and I mean all. An individual generation of an individual species of Tyranid is composed of traits harvested from the genetics of countless prey species, and that mixture of qualities will vary from generation to generation to better equip it for the conditions on a world being devoured.

This is quite convenient from a sound design perspective... as you can draw from a wider range of sources for sound effects than looking only for the sounds of up-scaled insects.
