40K-universe history audio?

By socratim, in Deathwatch

Is there any kind of audio out here that tells about the history of the 40k-universe? Like how the SM-chapters where founded and how Horus betrayed the emperor and such.

Like an audio-book, a podcast or similar. Something to learn the basics before heading into a DW-adventure.

Well, if you already have the rulebook, There is a run-through of all that starting on page 10 I believe, and other retellings are included in the tabletop game codicies for The Space Marines and Chaos Marines.

Otherwise, I've got a 2 page explanation from the Space Marine codex typed up for the sake of my players, but I have no idea if there would be objections to me sending that to you.

Thanks a lot for the offer, but I am specifically searching for audio-material, because many of my players don't invest much time outside of actual gameplay to prepare, so I was hoping for some audio-material to give them to listen in the car for example.

For Warhammer Fantasy there is nice podcast (Small and Vicious Podcast), which explains many aspects of the game in detail in some episodes. Like the gods, the cities, etc.

So I was hoping for something similar... Well maybe I will have to create such a thing myself sometime... :-)

Aye, I don't think there's anything like that.

I'm not sure why they can't spend 5-10 minutes reading it though - it's not that big a section.

That's not the only thing I have to put up with, but I basically have no other options playing... ;-)

Guess I will have to lecture the important bits to them...

(Sometimes I dream of a group, where I am not the only one to know the rules, the background and (of course) the adventure and has to juggle everything as a GM for an impatient group... - including sound effects and music)

Wow what a lazy group of players. How much do they know of WH40k?
Send em a link to lexicanum and tell them to read up on the lore (Horus heresy, the foundings etc etc) or you'll just not GM.

No need for something so drastic... I don't think many GMs refuse to run a D&D campaign if the players don't know who Drizzt is. :/

This is a case of the people getting the politicians that they deserve, or in your case getting the gaming group that you deserve. They are spoiled and to be honest you have been letting them get away with being this selfish for way too long. Its supposed to be fun for everyone involved, including the game master and they should respect that you put a hell of a lot of work into that, to be honest I'd be a little miffed if I were you.

Someone suggested that you should stop running the games if they did not at least invest a minimum of effort to get into the game then by all means, don't run the game for them, 5 minutes of time is not too much to ask for.

That said, if your gonna wimp out there are some pretty good, but a little expensive audio versions of the Horus Heresy, I guess you could make THEM invest in those so they can listen in the car and so on or while their moms spoon feeds them or what not.

Sorry I didn't mean to be trollish and I should probably change the post, but don't let them walk all over you like that, say no to them more, kill of a favoured character or 3, make them fear you a little.

Are people really forgetting the Horus Heresy abridged audio books?

They're on the Black Library website. As someone who read the book, the abridged versions aren't great, but they're certainly the closest thing to what you're looking for.

I found this on YouTube, narrated by Tom Baker no less.

Thanks for the youtube-link! Although I am searching for something more elaborate.

Yes, I spoiled my group. But those are all friends and family, used to me as a GM for now over 20 years... I would hate to kick the group all together, although I have to say there are times when I am fed up with them and don't arrange any sessions. :-) (That is another thing - all seem to have fun, but I am the only one to arrange something...)

(What I hate even more than the lack of interest in the background is the interest in the rules. But then again, I'm that kind of guy that draws his fun out of the players having fun and telling me. So I basically take no risk, I guess... ;-) )

The Horus-audio-books are a good hint! Will have a look into them!
