Discarding Skill cards?

By skritchettfang, in Battlestar Galactica

Hi all

Had this game for Xmas and our group loves it however I have one question that a trawl through the rules does not seem to have resolved

Some Crisis cards have an option for you to take a skill test or you and maybe someone else has to discard skill cards

If a Crisiss card gives you the option for you and/or another player to discard a number of cards (ie the president discards 2 cards & current player discards 3 cards) can you take this option even if one or both of the players has'nt got enough cards to discard (i.e. President only has 2 cards and current player has 1 card)

in this case if this is allowed I asume players would just discard all they had.

Thanks in advance for your answers

Steve

Nope.

Think of it as a requirment to do this "The President AND you have to discard 2 cards." If you only have 1 card, you cannot discard two. Think of it like you want a cheeser burger, but only have 1 dollar even though it cost 2. :)

Now my question off of yours is this- if you discard two, would the president HAVE to discard 2 (if they had them) This would be a good way to tick the president off, if they said they didn't want to but you forced them....

Actually, yes you can choose that option even if you or the other player (or both of you) don't have enough cards, because you choose that option before you check to see if you can fulfill it. And yes, in that case you just discard all that you can. The only thing that you MUST have all the cards to discard for is Laura Roslin's negative abilty where she has to discard two cards before she can activate a location.

Mattr0polis is right.

I forget though, do you also have to have a card to discard to move between ships?

Oh yeah, i forgot about that. Yeah, I'm assuming that you also need to have one card to discard to do that, as it's similiar to the situation with Laura's ability.

Ok Thaks Guys

The general opinion seems to be that you and another dont have to for the crisis card choices but do for the discard a card and then do somthing actions

So Unles FF tell us different thjats what we will do

Steve

For any of us with a CCG background, it's pretty obvious. You must pay costs. Effects happen to the best of their ability. That doesn't mean the designers were thinking this way. Only that the question of discards already fit a logical pattern in the mind of CCG players.

Correct. This is clarified on page 30 of the rules: "Choice Crises".

Oh thanks Your Best Friend

That rule reference clears up the matter completely we missed that in three re-reads of the rules

So just to clarify,

You CAN choose an option on a crisis card that requires players to discard their skill cards even if they don't have cards to drop.

but

You CAN'T travel between ships without cards

and

Roslin CAN'T activate a location without two cards to drop.

Right?

So for Food and Water shortages, you can always choose the option that requires you to drop cards instead of losing 2 food (for food shortage) or 1 food (for water shortage).

In one of my games we didn't know that you could do that, so the humans lost because of all the food shortage cards being close together and Roslin never having any cards to discard so we thought we were forced to drop 2 food every time instead of 1 food and a few cards. Roslin was a human that time.
