Monsters at Gate Locations

By Jochelbaer, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'm not so sure when to evade/fight monsters at gate Locations.

1. I enter the area of the Gate from the streets and fight the monsters before I go to the OW.

2. I return from the OW. Do I have to fight the monsters first or can I ignore them in the movement phase? The gate closing happens in the Encounter phase.

3. I return as a result of en OW-Encounter. Do I have to wait for the next turn for closing the gate. What about the monsters?

And at last a different question:

Is a combat check always also a fight check, but not the other way around? I think so, but I'm not sure.

1. Correct; fighting/evading monsters happens during the Movement Phase, going through the gate is during the Arkham Encounter Phase, so you'll have to fight them before you enter the Gate.

2. During the turn you return from an OW, you can ignore monsters on the Gate. The turn after that, however, you'll have to fight the monsters, regardless of whether you managed to close the Gate or not.

3. Closing the Gate is during Arkham Encounter Phase, which happens before the OW Encounter Phase. Therefore yes, you'll have to wait for the next turn before you can close the Gate. Since that is not the turn you returned from the OW, you'll have to fight/evade the monsters as normal.

You're right, a combat check is always a Fight check, but not the other way around.

I can think of only two exceptions, the Storm of Spirits spell card and the Dark Pharao Mask monster, both of which require you to use Lore instead of Fight. In that case, the combat check would be a Lore check.

Thank you. I just recovered two Sanity. happy.gif

Does this mean, I can choose to fight the monsters?

Yes. The rules give you the option to not fight monsters on the gate when you pop out. You make that choice before you roll to close/seal the gate - so be darned sure that you can win that fight if you shoose to fight.
