Additional Ships Compendium - Hawking-class

By Javlynn, in Rogue Trader House Rules

Ello all, this is my attempt at converting a ship from the BFG additional ships compendium. The Hawking-class originally came from the BFG Magazine #13 and I wanted to try doing it justice.

Hawking Class Exploration Crusier
Dimensions: 4.7 km long, 0.6 abeam at fins approx.
Mass: 24 megatonnes approx.
Crew: 80000 crew approx.
Accel: 4.1 gravities max sustainable acceleration

The Hawking Class dates from the time of the legendary crusades of the Lord Solar Macharius. The original Hawking was a hastily constructed vessel, designed to range ahead of Macharius' main battlefleet and search the Halo Stars for enemy fleets and new worlds to conquer. This new ship was a success and use of the design gradually spread throughout the Imperial Navy over the following centuries. Excelling at long range, solo exploration, scounting and patrol missions, those few Hawking-class vessels still in existence have often been extensively refitted. Their hulls, partway in size between the Dauntless and Lunar classes, crammed full of improved sensors and other devices to ensure their survivability. The capabilities of these Exploration Crusiers are held in high esteem by Imperial Admirals, while Naval crews superstitiously consider this class of vessel to be lucky. It is very rare for a Rogue Trader to be allowed one of these coveted vessels.

Speed: 6 Manoeuvrability: +15
Detection: +25 Hull Integrity: 60
Armour: 20 Turret Rating: 2
Space: 65 SP: 60

Weapon Capacity: 1 Prow, 2 Port, 2 Starboard
(Of these one port and one starboard come pre-equipped with components)

Carrier: The Hawking-class crusier comes pre-equipped with two Jovian-pattern Escort Bay components. The hull's space has already been reduced to account for this; however, when the ship is constructed it must be able to provide one Power to each Escort Bay component (two in total).

Extended Operations: The Hawking-class vessels primary role is deep space exploration, spending years at a time away from the Imperium. This ship may be equipped with up to two Extended Supply Vaults components.

Lucky: The Hawking-class ships are considered unusually lucky by those that serve on them and by the naval officers these ships normally opperate under. These ships have 2 fate points that may be spent like normal on rolls effecting the ship (firing the guns, repair, ect.). These fate points may also be burned to avoid destruction of the vessel.

it's a very nice ship, though I'd augment the SP cost. As it is, it is far better than a Lunar with free components, and even better than a Dictator which cost 3 SP more. To represent her rairty and that the Navy don't want to give them, I'd up the SP up to 64-65.

Points are kind of roughly where they should be give or take 1-2. I'd probably increase the hull to 65 or so as they're roughly between a Dauntless and Lunar in size, maybe add something like a Exploration Bridge as standard in them with +1 SP in cost. They definately are one of the more interesting ships though and would have most rogue traders willing to swap and arm or leg for one

Both excellent suggestions, I have upped the point cost and added the exploration bridge. While I personally prefer players to be able to add such important features as the bridge themselves I do agree the exploration bridge just fits the ships stated role too well. I have added a few extra hit points to the design along with upping the point cost, though with only the escort launch bays I am loath to add to many points to the cost. Thanks for the advice. happy.gif

Here is the modified version, let me know what you think of the changes.

Sights Unseen: The Hawking's are a class dedicated to boldly going where no Imperial has gone before, bringing the word of the God-Emperor to the heathen and purging fire to the Xeno. Hawkings are dedicated exploration cruisers, as such they come pre-equipped with an Exploration Bridge component. The hull's space has already been reduced to account for this; however, when the ship is constructed it must be able to provide four Power to this component.

the new version sounds good, nice job !

good work i like it.

Well it looks good, now can we have artwork to go along with it.

It looks good to me, the fluff is solid and it seems to add a new type of ship to the mix in a category that only had a Mechanicus cruiser in it before. bobh is putting together a living codex of fan-based Voidships, I think you should contribute. Here's the link to the folder, if you'd like to read the submission guide and add your design, that'd be swell.
