Flying ability prevents pit trap?

By Kindjie, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I'm Overlording a game with two buddies and ran into an interesting situation I haven't found an answer for. One player was playing Karnon with Wings of Regiroth (Yes... a flying yeti lengua.gif ) and was advancing to a quest monster when I played a Spiked Pit Trap on him. Does his flying ability prevent him from falling into the pit and taking damage, or are traps handled independently from pits?

Thanks!

Flying enables the hero to move through obstacles while ignoring them, it does nothing against Traps. A Spiked Pit Trap is a Trap, that creates an obstacle after it has been resolved.

The Winged Karnon would take the damage from the Spiked pit (assuming he didn't avoid it with the usual rolls) but would not have to pay the extra MP to move out of the pit afterwards.

If you have a deep seated need to rationalise this you are probably playing the wrong game for a start! But it is easily rationalised in several ways (pretty much anything can be rationalised in Descent if you are clever enough). Dungeons have low ceilings, relatively (witness being unable to fly over grapplers to avoid grapple), so flying is awkward and flyers tend to stay on the ground when they don't need to be actively flying. The trap is a surprise to a walking Karnon and takes effect, but he can easily fly out of the pit.

Thanks! They ended up getting out of it with a feat card anyway but with the amount we play this game I'm sure it'll come up again.

Oh! Believe me, I came up with dozens of ways to rationalise the trap hitting. hehe
