Splitting Fate Points Into Two Types

By Decessor, in Dark Heresy House Rules

After noting complaints about character survivability on a thread I set up in the GM section about fate points, an idea struck me.

Split fate points into two types. Those that can *only* be burned to save a character's life and those that can be spent every session for all the other benefits. Say, Salvation Points and Luck Points respectively to give them working titles.

Some ideas on how to do this:

1. GM assigns the number of SP and LP at campaign's start. Say generate FP, assign one as a SP and the rest LP.

2. Players can choose how to split their FP into SP and LP at campaign start.

3. Players can choose how to assign newly gained FP.

So what do people think?

It seems you are looking to add a layer of complexity to a simple mechanic.

As to the game being too survivable, that is all in how the game is run. My DH GM is not as forgiving as some it seems.

I decided to throw the idea out there. I don't intend to use it myself, since I think the fate point system is fine as is.

If you want to make FP burning less powerful, just make it use simply means you do not die. Passed the toughness test if it was possible or something miraculous happened.

Don't drop any Crit effects, and add those which were skipped over. So if someone was at 5 crit and took 4 damage they would be at 9 crit and almost certainly dead. Assuming they burn fate, they live but crit effects 6,7, and possibly 8 are all added. Leads to burnt fate leaving someone more out of the fight than normal, and means more bionics will be used.
