Holy and Learned Characters

By Bomb, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Just a simple search through a card DB shows that these types of characters are infrequent. Baratheon and Greyjoy may have a number of Holy through chapter expansions and there are a few Learned neutral characters in secret of Oldtown. It just seems like Noble and War have been getting more love including more cards that affect that type of crest.

Anyone been building decks that revolve around Holy or Learned crests? I just haven't seen enough of either character type to justify that yet.

Maybe the Secret of Oldtown has more because that chapter pack appears to have a lot of neutral Learned characters.

This post is one of many ways I am trying to learn more about the game and how everyone on here perceives to play it.

Baratheon Asshai Deck is nasty. unkneeling holy crest charcters with deadly and character recursion. not to mention the Altar of fire which i love

Holy builds best out of GJ and Bara. I had a GJ Holy deck for a while but I couldnt decide if it was for melee or joust and consequently it didn't do well for either. I think one of the 2CaaC guys took a GJ Holy to regionals and did well.

Not fast enough. Not enough native renown in the Holy crest. Not enough ways to give non uniques Renown. The Plot is a trap.

Yeah I'm not sure. There is even a specific plot for Holy characters called Power of Faith which appears to be pretty nice, but the character count and usefulness appears to be lacking. It's also nice that you can use 2 copies of it in one round of plots.

Maybe if all Holy characters are used in combination with some other interesting characters it would appear more beneficial. Just trying to get a feeler in Holy and Learned's use.

It's a delayed rush build. With Unopposed Mel you can grab a bunch real quick like with back to back Power of Faith. And what plot do you refer to as a trap?

It also works well in a plot acceleration deck with Bran + Marya + Inn, Bungled Orders/Tides of War & the Bara Rookery.

I think he's saying The Power of Faith is a trap. I've toyed around with an Asshai deck for quite some time, in many ways I can say I agree with him.

Claim 2 plots are pretty **** important in this game. If you're running 2 copies of The Power of Faith and Valar, 3 spots are already eaten away. Then, add in any "must have" or utility plots (like Many Powers Long Asleep) and you have very little room for 2 claimers in my experience.

It's a very good plot, but it's not nearly as good as it seems in my experience.

It may get better with the addition of Conflict of Interest . :)

Not really, there are exactly 0 Baratheon characters with a learned crest. I supposed you could run a few of the neutrals that have it, though there aren't many characters in the entire game that have a learned crest.

There is a new event that makes Asshai characters learned until the end of the phase, but it's not very reliable to expect to combo 2 events together. Hard enough to draw them both, then factor in Paper Shield...

Is it possible to build any sort of competitive plot cycling deck yet? Its been on my mind for a long time, but there are so few cards that work for this... probably best out of Stark with Bran and Minstrel's Muse, lots of Rookeries, Winter Festival, etc. Seems like it has too many fragile moving pieces to work, Bran will get VB or burned, it requires a Season, Bungled Orders is kind of a mess and an invitation for your opponent to Valar, Citadel Law might help some though.

Exaclty so, Stais. Power of Faith is a trap for the deck builder.

Two turns of non kneeling Holy characters with the mlitiary icon is tempting - but exactly one character (Mel) can maximize it and challenges are still too open to disruption. If you're going to win rush - I suspect you have to fo ti quickly. For all the attartcion of delayed rush, I think if you give Lannister or martell until Turn Four - they will have outdraw you to the point where they can clamp the lock and its a lost cuase.

Hahaha, it sounds like only trying to shoehorn Power of Faith into a rush deck is a trap. Out of Greyjoy I've had great luck with it in melee and joust. It creates a force to be reckoned with out of a variety of characters. Great abilities or not, lots of non-kneeling characters create an issue for your opponents. I've also found this to be the case in joust with Baratheon Asshai builds, though I admit to not testing it out in melee.

An important thing to consider is that Baratheon and Greyjoy are also houses with a 1 gold attachment to grant the Holy crest. What it awesome in Greyjoy on Euron Crow's Eye can likewise be amazing on Ser Eldon Estermont.

It's not a no brainer of a plot by any means, but it's much, much better than the credit being given so far.

I was waiting for your reply since I knew you used this plot to great success.
