Playing against a Baratheon power deck

By bbleers, in 4. AGoT Deck Construction

What is a good house/strategy when playing a well constructed Baratheon power deck? My buddy has a kick ass power deck. Almost all of his characters have renown and his deck is full of event cards that give him additional bonus' when he wins power challenges by 4+ like Seductive Promise, King Robert's Debt, etc. I tried a Greyjoy Deck revolving on Euron and several cheap characters and used my stealth to beat him 2 out of 4 but he destroyed my Tully/Stark deck 5 times. Any suggestions?

I'm a big fan of Targ burn as an anti-Baratheon strategy, but depending on how fast his deck is, you might not be able to get the burn working before he can win. So instead I will recommend Martell (even if they are the trendy popular House right now); attack his hand with all the Martell Intrigue characters since Bara has poor draw most of the time, Burning on the Sand and Viper's Rage will slow him down quite a bit, and Game of Cyvasse will send those power-filled-unkillable-because-of-Power-of-Blood Renown characters back to his hand. Once you slow down the rush, Bara often collapses.

I think there is nothing you can do. This friend of yours sounds like a deck-building genius, a real prince among men. He probably has a bigger ***** than you do. Take my advice and give up while you can.

Wow, all I can say is that I hope you know each other.

Ahahahahahaha! Wtf?

I have a funny feeling that was said friend... =)

Play Jhalabr Xho so his characters cant claim renown, or play Melisandre so his power on charcters does not count towards win total

which house are you playing with?

Run Targaryen burn. My preference is a couple copies of Flaming Pitch Tower (After you win a challenge by 4 or more total STR, kneel Flaming-Pitch Tower to choose a character without attachments. Until the end of the phase, that character gets -4 STR and is killed if its STR is 0. (Limit 1 Limited Response per round). That and some attachment control should do the job nicely.

Glad to hear someone else suggesting Targ!
If he's consistently winning challenges by 4+ STR, Sunstroke would be a great counter. Plus its recursable with LDC...

I was previously attempting with my Direwolf deck Jack. He's got some really good rush cards like Eldon Estermont / Knight of Flowers(secrets), etc. that often make it difficult to win by 4 or more. I just finished my first Lannister deck and think I'll do a bit better with it. Thanks guys.

He also likes to use King Roberts Debt and Knights of the Storm to irk me. It's a pretty good deck and he compliments it well with plots like Lineage and Legacy and Money Loyalty Can Buy that hinder efforts to cut through them. I did better with a stealth heavy Greyjoy deck that focused on using Euron and characters like Wex plus plenty of cheap muscle but still only managed to get him half the time. Lately my decks I've been working on have focused on draw and getting lots of characters out quickly. I put together a pretty good Stark / Tully deck I think and my Lannister deck uses Tommen / Mance and Cersei (Trials) in combination with Pyromancers cache and a few heralds plus Summoning season. Lots of gold and kneel cards too. I think this one is pretty good just need to tweak my plot deck. Jhalabar Xho is in there and so is King Joffrey's Host, etc.
