New to the game looking for painting tips

By Sgt. Rock, in Dust Tactics

I just got this for my bday from the wife along with the cyclone expansion and some other minis.

Haven't painted minis or anything for over a decade, any books or how to guides out there that would be useful for a novice painter?

Thanks and I'm loving reading the rules now. Any Chicago gamers out there drop me note.

The Rock.

Where to begin? there's so many miniatures painting sites out there I don't even know what to recommend :)

Cool Mini or Not has a lot of great painters. Also the message board Dakka Dakka has some good modeling and painting forums where you can get lots of tips.

Theres also some great tips right here if you dig around the painting forum. Just come up with a color scheme you like and dig in :) For my models, I'm using the gray or green as my base color and building up from there. So for my Axis models they're dark gray with light gray camo kind of like the photos on the walker cards. For my Allies I plan to go with dark green armor pieces but a more desert yellow kind of color for the clothing.

Checking out the Flames of War site might help you, as well as Fine Scale Magazine's site. A trip to you local book store should allow you to get various periodicals on modeling. Also, Games Workshop has printed a book or two on painting miniatures. Lastly, and one that helped me, Privateer Press has DVD on learning to paint miniatures. I found it nice to see and hear how it was done rather than reading it and seeing before/after photos.

Hope that helps.

Thanks all for the tips some good stuff there, love the dvd I will definitely get that.

YOU CAN CHECK OUT THE PAOLO PARENTES DUST SITE TOO. IT HAS THE ORIGINAL STUFF. I REALLY LIKE THE SCHEMES OF THE RAKETEN TRUPPEN.

Check out my blog it has some step by step how to's on painting.

Can anyone help me decipher this "winter peadot" camo that is used on these Raketen Truppen?

As near as I can figure it replaces the various peadot colors on normal German camo with shades of grey and a blue green dot added. I am not good with photoshop, but I think the photo can be enhanced to show the colors or even break it down. Not sure

I was just going to use the base grey the Axis troops are primed in, add some dark grey and medium grey patches, and then star spatter black, blue-green, and white dots.

I'd recommend GW Shadow Grey, GW Space Wolves Grey, GW Skull White for that. Hope it helps.

What's up man. I just had my copy of the base game delivered to work today. I live in Chicago, on the North side. Where are you?

I just ordered command squads, light walkers, and Operation Cyclone today! AAAAAHHH!!

I will probably be getting both seelowe and cyclone. I'm just worried about investing in all of this and not really being able to get a good amount of games in. Painting it all will be **** fun tho!

Do you ever go to the dicedojo? I was hosting a lot of games for Descent a while back.

Hey, I live in Lakeview a block up from Lincoln Park. I go to cat n mouse games usually and play weekly board games with a group of guys I met there.

We are 5 in our gaming group and always looking for more.
