Encountering vs Invisibility

By Drakkkan, in Talisman Rules Questions

Situation: My character has Magic Object which has text: "When encountering your opponent, dicard this Item and do xxxx (for example take all Golds from you opponent)

Now: I encounter opponent, discard this Item and want attack him. He plays Invisibility. So he evade the combat that is ok. But now we are arguing, if My object is just discarded without any effect, or the effect of that Object is triggered. So question is, if Invisibility Spell "cancel" encountering the character, or it just grant evading the combat.

Invisibility allows you to Evade any Enemies/Characters and Evading is "avoiding to encounter". Of course you can Evade an opponent that's encountering yours to use a special ability, instead of attacking.

What about situations like yours? I don't know if you're referring to a specific Magic Object, but let's take the basic Potion of Strength as an example. If you land on a Character and declare you want to encounter or attack him, he must be given the opportunity to Evade. This happens thanks to a Spell or special ability. If the player does nothing, you can discard the Potion of Strength and he has no chance to play Invisibility then. Evading opportunity is lost.

Sometimes players tend to rush things and the attacking Character may not give time to the defender to play a Spell. In this cases, I usually advise not to go too fast and to use cards/abilities gradually. In an example like yours I would just say the opponent can Evade and you don't discard the item because the encounter never took place. Next time try not to discard right when you say "I'm attacking you".
