New to Game of Thrones in general, lots of questions about buying cards.

By SeerMagic, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

The HBO show introduced me to Game of Thrones. Loved it, got the core set of the game, loved it. Now I'm reading the books.

Here are my questions

What order was the sets/chapters released? I plan to slowy get them all.

Where are the sets in terms of story to the book? I don't want to get ahead of the book with cards.

I heard that older sets sometimes only came with x1 of certain cards. Is there any I should wait on a reprint that will have x3?

thanks to anyone that can help! can't wait to order some new cards!

The individual chapter packs (small expansions) aren't likely to be reprinted in 3x format any time soon, I don't think.

The Greyjoy expansion (Kings of the Sea) was just reprinted to 3x. Princes of the Sun is coming out in 3x format later this year, so wait for that one. That's really the only thing to wait for in terms of 3x printing.

The first expansion cycle was A Clash of Arms (Sacred Bonds, Ancient Enemies, Calling the Banners, Epic Battles, Battle of the Ruby Ford, The War of Five Kings)

Second was A Time of Ravens (A Change of Seasons, Winds of Winter, Song of Summer, The Raven's Song, Scattered Enemies, Refugees of War)

Third was King's Landing which is my personal favorite expansion cycle (Secrets and Spies, City of Secrets, A Time of Trials, Tower of the Hand, Tales from the Red Keep, The Battle of Blackwater Bay)

Fourth was Defenders of the North (Wolves of the North, Beyond the Wall, The Wildling Horde, A King in the North, A Sword in the Darkness, Return of the Others)

Fifth was Brotherhood without Banners, which is when they printed every card at 3x per copy, whereas before some of the cards in the packs were only 1x. (Illyrio's Gift, Of Snakes and Sand, Rituals of R'hllor, Dreadfort Betrayal, A Song of SIlence, Mountains of the Moon)

Now it's Secrets of Oldtown, so far only three have been released: Forging the Chain, Gates of the Citadel, and Called by the Conclave.

There are spoilers all over the place. as the cards arent released in any sort of timeline order. Even in the Core Set you will find spoilers.

So uh... good luck with that.

i'm having a issue looking for what to buy as well so I'll jump on this post instead of making my own.

I was the first at my game store to buy the game and im slowly spreading the love of the game to others. I have no one who knows aobut the game localy to talk to and no store near me has any of the smaller xpacs. Stores now just have the core and the kings of the seas, kings of the storms, queen of dragons and soon the princes of the sun. i am intersted in either modifying the core decks or making new ones for those houses along with making a grejoy and martell deck just so anyone who wants to play at my local store can play with their fav house and get into the game. I really feel overhelmed by the amount chapter pakcs there are and have no idea what i should buy for my own personsal deck (havn't picked a house I like more than another yet) or what i need to buy in general to beef up the core decks up to 60 and just with more fun cards. the stores around me will order in what they can get but i have NO idea what I need to be asking for!

thanks man, that's helpfull. a few more questions if you don't mind. should i buy the more expensive expansions before the chapters? does chapters favor one house (more cards) than others?

This is purely a matter of opinion, but in my opinion you should buy the deluxe expansions first. They simply are more focused because 90% of the cards are for one house. If you bought core + each houses deluxe expansion you'd have a more cohesive beginning collection to build decks with.

The individual chapter packs I'd buy after that to supplement your decks you've built with the deluxe expansions. You'd be prioritizing the chapter packs based on what deck or house you were focusing on at the time OR you would buy them based on which chapter packs offer the most and best cards for the greatest number of decks or houses.

Out of curiosity, where are y'all located? One of the great things about the community is there willingness to help and mentor newer players... and answer questions one - on - one. (not that we don't want to be helpful here as well. :)

Well I ended up ordering 3 expansions and 9 chapter packs. Splitting with my brother who is also new to the game. Hopefully that'll give me enough cards to be competitive.

It's a pity, there used to be a small meta that played out at Top Shelf Games. They pretty much folded at the change over to LCG... but that should mean there is fertile ground to bring people back.

I play at a new store called white knight games, and i have got a pretty nice group interested in the game with one for sure going to by his own core set. the prob is we need ppl who alreayd know the game to help us figure out what we need to buy lol to augment / make own decks.

There are some articles written on cardgamedb.com for new players. You can also go to agotcards.org to see what a lot of players rank cards, then find out which chapter packs they're in and buy them.

I've done a decent job to get going. Core set, 4 expansions, 12 chapter packs.

Muahaha. Welcome to the game ;)

The series made me want to buy the card game too! But right now, the core set is out of stock :(. I just hope they won't make me wait too long :(

Edit: I did have one question though, if you buy every single pack there is, would you have every single card that exists?

For the Living Card game, Yes and No. the chapter packs do not include cards printed in the delux expansions, so to have a complete collection of atleast 1 of each card you'd need to purchase the Core +4 Delux Expansions + Each chapter pack. Though the first four Sets of chapter packs did not come with 3x of each card as explained earlier in this post, they atleast had 1 of each card printed. I hope this answers your Question

Yes it did, thank you very much! So then I have to buy the Core Set, the Deluxe Expansions, and everything else after that to have the complete collection.

Any idea when the core pack will be made available again?

Thank you for the link, I'm not going to use it though, since I live in France and the shipping rates are atrocious! But you've shown me I can buy the Set from other retailers, and I'll be ordering it from Amazon :D.

Thank you again :)
