Fly and Breath

By Delwarren, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Please bear with me as i do not have the cards in front of me...

As the overlord, if you choose the dragon as your avatar, you gain access to purchase a dragon LT that has both fly and breath.

To me, there is a bit of a grey area as to how his breath works.

now, we all know that breath ignores range. if you are flying, you are 4 'squares' higher.

So, my question is this:

Can said LT be flying and then breath on a party of 4 adventurers [i.e. be 5 spaces away] and effect them?

Does said LT have to 'swoop' to do this? [as i understand it, they swoop to attack (melee) and since breath ignores range, it should not need to]

If the LT does not have to 'swoop' does this mean that only heros with range and magic could be the ones to use their guard order?

Finally, Since breath does not check for range when calculating damge, does the breath attack actually hit the heros being that it originated from 5 'squares' up. [as far as i understand it, you put the breath template on the map to check for effected heros, monsters. range is not a factor, only that the origination point was the monster or item, etc, using the ability]

hope this gets some discusion, as i was an OL with this specific set of conditions and was unable to fathom how it would work out.

I have been an OL for about 2 yrs and my friend and i have all the add-ons up to sea of blood.

Its very simple, the breath template ignore soar entirely. Just place the template and those are the spaces that are affected, regardless of anyone soaring or not.

Your problem is entirely made up, caused by bad paraphrasing that has 'created' a bunch of non existant rules. For examples, Soarers are not '5 spaces up'. That is just a paraphrase that makes it easier to think of. Soarers merely add 4 to the range either to or from them. Since the breath template does not count range, there is no conflict or problem here.

FAQ pg14
Soar
Q: How does Soar interact with the breath template? Can Soaring creatures use Breath without having to descend? If a Soaring creature is hit by the breath template, is it actually hit?
A: Breath attacks always ignore range, and therefore treat Soaring creatures the same way they treat any other creature.

Note that several of your questions were actually asked here, and although the answer does not seem to address them directly, it was deemed sufficient.

thank you corbon. i do have that FAQ and have read that answer. I just wanted to make sure that it is/was as i guessed it to be.
