Issue with Improved Counterspell

By Lord_Ruben, in WFRP Rules Questions

I'm having some trouble grasping why Improved Counterspell is only valid out to Close range. The regular Counterspell card has no range qualifier, so it doesn't make sense for Improved Counterspell to have such a limited range since it replaces Counterspell in the action deck. If it didn't replace Counterspell it would make more sense, since one would give you greater range and the other greater power. But as it is, I don't think the ability to add a challenge die for 3 power is worth losing the unlimited range of the regular Counterspell.

Am I missing something? Should one of the two cards be corrected in the FAQ? Has this been address anywhere else?

Counterspell only works on spells that target you, while Improved Counterspell let's you interfere with spells that are cast by anyone within close range (even if you are not the target). But I agree with you, as it is written someone casting a spell from medium or long range, targeting you, can't be countered by Improved Counterspell but can be affected by the regular Counterspell, which is strange. I can't find any clarification/errata/FAQ on this card but I feel that it is misprinted since spellcasters usually keep a distance (in my oppinion) which would make Counterspell more useful than the improved version.

As a GM I would rule that Improved Counterspell can counter all spells targeting you (as the regular counterspell does), with the addition of beeing able to interfere with spellcasters casting spells within close range.

FFG has said you get the regular Counterspell still when you have Improved. Since it's the same red/green, I just put both cards in a sleeve for my wizard player and he has the regular one and then improved one with close etc.

Valvorik, can you please point me to where FFG has posted this? Thanks!

k7e9, I didn't notice that the Improved Counterspell can target any spell, not just the ones that target you. That does definitely make it a lot more powerful.

Never mind, I found the thread where this was addressed. I still would like to see this get added to the living Errata/FAQ PDF up on the Support page.

Thanks for the help!

I agree, it should be added to the Errata/FAQ since the thread is kind of old and might be hard to find. Now I at least know where I got my interpretation from, I have read that before.

The target needs to be within close range. The target is the target of the hostile spell. The range of the hostile spell is irrelevant. That's how it's intended I believe.
